Does anyone know when we will find out where we'll be going for years 3 and 4?

How many guests do people bring to the white coat ceremony?

This is where previous year match lists have been posted.
http://www.ttuhsc.edu/som/studentAffairs/residency.aspx

Not sure why the 2006 list doesn't have a link there, but it is online.
http://www.ttuhsc.edu/som/studentAffairs/docs/Match_List_2006.pdf

I imagine it will take a few days for the 2007 list to get posted.

Not online yet, but I have the paper version.
It seems that 113 of 114 matched into something or other. 1 deferred.
54% primary care
26% at TTUHSC for PGY-1
74% stayed in TX for PGY-1

At quick glance, I note 1 EM at Duke, 1 Int. Med at UCLA, and lots matching into UTSW & Baylor.

No, campus assignments are done prior to MSI. You will find out before orientation I believe. You can appeal during MSII if need be.

hmm...i can't decide between el paso and amarillo.

anyone want to help me with this one? i don't know what i want to do for residency yet. it seems like would-be surgeons like amarillo, but that's all i really have to go on. i sort of think living in el paso would be fun. but i really don't know.

Hey guys! I just got accepted off the WL today, not sure if I'm going since I'm already accepted at MCW, but Texas' tuition might be too good to pass up 🙂 .

congrats manboy, and good luck making that decision.

Any of you guys going to the Spring Training in April? Are you guys flying in or driving? If flying, how are you guys planning to get around the city?

Hey guys, like I said earlier I was just accepted off the WL but I'm having trouble deciding whether to attend here or MCW. Did any of you, that are either enrolled now or will be starting this coming August, have to make the choice between Tech and another medical school that you were accepted to? And if so, why did you decide Tech? I've gotten a lot of info from the school website and from the posts earlier in this thread, but still can't really get a feel of what students think about the newer curriculum. I know the question has been asked before, I'm just trying to get a lot of different perspectives on the school. Thanks for all the help 🙂 .

I had to choose between OOS schools too. At the time, cost was my biggest reason. I don't regret it though. Tech is fantastic. Wouldn't change it for the world.

I like the new curriculum. It is one of the reasons I ranked it over UTSW in TX. No he!! weeks, and few class hours. All high yield in my opinion.

Sahmbo,
It's tough to choose between EP & Amarillo. The problem is you have to choose now, & 10 to 1, the people you become friends with will be going to the other campus. Seems to always be the way it works. Don't stress over the decision as it's much less a big deal than you think, & student affairs will probably let you switch anyhow....but in this 3rd year's humble opinion:

EP - The hospital is busy & you will work ALOT. You may not go out for months at a time during hard rotations, but you may go out 3 times a week during family & peds. We get the worst evals of the 3 campuses because some of the attendings are hard-a@#es & refuse to give Honors, but we always score the highest on the shelf exams at the end of each rotation. Over 1/2 of your patient encountes will be conducted in Spanish. Bottom line: I believe EP makes you the best doctor.

Amarillo - My friends there go out every week at least 3 times. Those guys party alot & I'm bitter because of it. When they take call, it's usually from home, & the attendings rarely even call them because it's too big a hassle. They get the best evals & the lowest shelf exam scores. Also, because they work directly with attendings (no residents), I imagine they get very good letters of recc as well. Bottom line: Amarillo will make you look the best on paper.

So ultimately, it's up to you. If I could do it all over again, I'd probably pick Amarillo next time because I'm lazy & like to go out.

Also, if anyone is dying to get the match list, PM me & I can email it to you.

arsenal, i am amarillo bound in july, but we were told by the great Dr. Burke himself that amarillo gets the best shelf scores and step 2 scores.
now, he was the dean at amarillo before moving back to lubbock so he might be biased. but u sure about the whole shelf score thingie ??

Anyone have anything to say on the last 2 years in lubbock?

I am going to EP so I am biased:

EP has a level I trauma center. It has crazy interesting pathology because of the population base. And yes I came up with "crazy interesting" myself. It has a CITY, and plenty of Latino women. UTEP sports! Hospital is in bad area of town.

Lubbock has the most major residency positions of the Tech campuses. Hence it has more PD's, residents, and research. It has Tech sports. It has Tech women!

Amarillo has few residents. Which means you get more 1 on 1 time with attendings. It has fewer patients. I have not statistics, but according to students I know, there is more time to study for exams because you see fewer patients. Amarillo has no women that I am aware of, sorry. No sports and no outside life that I am aware of. For what it is worth (quote from nurse I know in Amarillo), Amarillo gets all the asian guys. Not sure why this is or if it is really even true.

Disclaimer: I am not liable for any strains of herpagonnasyphilaids acquired from Latina or Tech women. However I will take credit for any good times had.

I have a lot of friends at TTU. Could anyone post the match list? It still isn't up on the offical site. Thanks!

How many guests do people bring to the white coat ceremony?

I think I brought 8. I have family that lives here in Lubbock. Family finds things that have the word "ceremony" and it's a must-attend event. Other people, like boyfriends, find ceremonies boring and the phrase "white coat" turns boring into cheesey. I think it was held in the Civic Center last year - plenty of room for people (~1350). Other people had one set of parents or something to that effect.

3rd & 4th yr
Personally I'm going to EP. I think that is because I'm developing a case of fear of open spaces. EP, somewhere that is not so completely FLAT. I was really interested in the aspect of border medicine. In Amarillo, I think all the hospitals that you work with are private. This will give you a very different picture of practicing medicine.

i work at the HSC, I just swung by and picked up a match list (no electronic copy yet). Hopefully this should tide you guys over until the match list is put online.

lol the lady at student affairs told me that it wasn't up yet - good work

This was updated today on admissions page...I don't think it is still uploaded yet on Student Affairs page.

Im not sure if i saw this anywhere else but is there a note service for all the classes?

Yes, there is a student organized scribe service. At the beginning of the year someone from your own class will volunteer to head it up and organize everything for your class. Those who wish to participate are placed on a rotating schedule for scribe duty (don't worry, it's not very frequent) and are able to access the scribes for that year. Also the previous year's scribes are sold by the previous class for a small fee at the beginning of the year which are often just as helpful.

How many guests do people bring to the white coat ceremony?

The venue for this thing is plenty big and won't fill up so don't hesitate to invite as many as you need, assuming the school didn't give you a limit, which I don't remember them doing to us. But I do remember there being plenty of empty seats last year.

Can any of you 3rd and/or 4th years tell us what the schedule is like on a day-to-day basis in El Paso and in Amarillo? I don't quite understand how those in El Paso can be so much busier than those in Amarillo. I would think that the hours working at the hospital are standard whereever you are (like 7am-7pm every day)...or are they not?

Sahmbo,
Bottom line: I believe EP makes you the best doctor.

I'm not so sure about that, but it will make you the best intern.

The thing about El Paso that distinguishes it from the other campuses is less hand-holding. You just get in there and do it. If you see that an H&P needs to be done, you don't hang around a resident waiting for them to ask you to get it done.

Starting my surgical residency (I matched out of state), my co-interns were from all four corners of the U.S. And I was the only one who could get in there and do a quick but thorough H&P and physical exam, write admit orders, throw down a naso-gastric tube, throw in a line, and get them to CT in under an hour. You don't need a lot of knowledge to be an intern, but efficiency and resourcefulness are highly regarded.

If you are pro-active and like to get in there and get your hands in everything, then El Paso is the best possible environment for that. I did central lines, chest tubes, A-lines, minor procedures, sutured lacs, paracentesis, lumbar punctures, thoracostomy tubes, etc. And a million trauma H&P's, clinic H&P's, presentations on the wards/ICU, etc.

But those kids in Amarillo do look mighty, mighty pretty on paper. 😀

I'm biased but welcome to EP. I am from there, and I gotta say that I would have chosen it over the other 2 campuses had I chosen to attend Texas Tech.

EP is not a big metropolis (it's not on the level of Houston/Dallas by any means), but I think it's a good place to live. We do have a university that hosts the annual Sun Bowl, which attracts a lot of people, some of which tailgate for 2 days straight (I mention this mostly for the males here, 😉 ). Not to mention we have good, authentic Mexican food in every corner of the city, as well as your usual chain restuaurants you would find anywhere else. Shopping isn't bad, either, there are plenty of options. For winter ski trips, Ruidoso, NM, is only a measly 3-hours away, and it's a beautiful place. Or you can hop on across the border once in a while for more entertainment options, like everyone else.

Our crime rates are very low, and there are plenty of cheap housing options in nice areas of the city. I would actually consider buying a house there, since you will probably be able to get something nice (3b/2b) for under 100K, in a nice area. You might want to rent the extra rooms to other med students and cover your mortgage that way.

I suggest living on the West side, it's close to the mountains and the scenery is the best (NOT FLAT). It tends to be a little pricier than elsewhere, but I really think the extra ~100/mo. is worth it just to wake up with the mountains next to you. 😛

Besides that, hospitals there are busy. It's not a secret that the border towns have more interesting pathologies to be seen and a greater number of patients. I definitely think you guys will get great clinical experience.

PS. If any of y'all have any more questions about EP just send me a PM and I'll do my best to answer them. I have inside contacts 😉.

Just because you are at the hospital, doesn't mean there are patients there to be seen. For example, I have seen the ED in Lubbock with NO ONE on the board. Waiting time was less than 1 hour to see a doc.

In Houston, the average wait time for a doc in the ED is about 8 hours.

Do most of the profs have power point notes for their lectures?

My wife is an RN and will be working at UMC. We are looking to rent or buy a house depending on where we get years 3 & 4. Any current students in a similar position that might be able to comment on the degree that financial aid is able to contribute?

My wife and I rent a 2/1 house in Tech Terrace, about 24th and Boston, and pay $750/month. We survive on loans and her job at Tech. We are both really busy and end up eating out more than we should, yet we are still able to keep our heads above water. You'll be fine.

Thanks. Just trying to get things together.

100%. At least over the last couple years (as per several dept secretaries). Maybe it was different while he was acting dean.

Any one have any info about those who stay in lubbock for the last 2 years, such as how they do on the boards and what the last 2 years are like there compared to the other 2.

So, as an excuse to bump this thread, what apartments do you all recommend? 🙂

The Centre, they're close to campus, has covered parking (garage), and they're pretty new (1 year)

The Centre is new and very nicely built. However I would not recommend it. It is filled to the brim with undergrads, and an MSI who lives there got his/her car keyed over $3000 worth last month. For April Fools, I painted a few cars of friends living in the Centre (washable paint - don't worry). I waved at the security guard on the way in and the way out.

I would recommend living farther from campus. You'll find most of the grad students on the opposite side of town. There are fewer undergrads, so less noise and problems. That and living across town is only 15 min. from campus at most.

I'll throw in my shameless sales pitch. I just renewed my lease at a place called Las Colinas. I wouldn't have renewed if it wasn't great. They are mostly 2 bedroom townhomes that range from $600-$700 with 2 covered parking spots. They are 2 story townhomes. I use the 2nd room as a study. My next door neighbor was an MS2, and there are tons of grad students here and young families. Very quiet and peaceful. It isn't the newest place or very appealing from the outside, but over 1000 sq. ft., 2 bedrooms, and quiet was too good to pass up. Please PM me if you decide to live here. I get $100 off for recommending people. But again, I would not release and recommend it if I wasn't happy with the place. 8-10 minutes from campus.

If not Las Colinas, I would check out the Wyndham or renting a house. Renting a home would give you the most space, and I've heard there are plenty available.

this is true, most of my MSI friends that live there were tech undergrads so it worked out for them

your options are good too, although 8-10 mins from campus makes it sound misleadingly close as you can drive from one end of the city to the other in about 10 minutes

I agree with the above comments about the centre. In terms of closeness, amenities, luxury, quality, etc. it get two big thumbs up, but in terms of putting up with undergrads, pulled fire alarms, construction at 4th and University, etc. it get two big thumbs down in my book.

If you're going to spring training you'll get a ton of opinions and views of different apartments. I chose Springfield (4th'ish and Milwaukee) for many of the same reason TexPre-Med mentioned. It is very quiet and the large majority are graduate students. In my building there is 1 grad student and 3 med students and I know of at least 5 more students in my class that live here too. It's considered "far" from campus, but like Las Colinas, and most anywhere in Lubbock for that matter, that is still less than 10 minutes. It actually takes right at 10 minutes on a busy day at 8am when there is most traffic.

Another popular complex is Ashton Pointe. It's a little closer to campus on 4th and all the same perks as mentioned above.

For those of you who are going to the Spring Training, what are you planning to bring with you?

Also, I believe they said the dress code for meals is casual....correct me if I'm wrong....

I wondered why I received such a great discount at Las Colinas, and one of your MSI classmates figured it out. For a 12 month lease, they offer $100 off each month for medical students only. This is probably the coolest thing that has happened to me as a med student. Everyone else only gets up to $250 off only the first month. Just thought I'd pass on the information, and be sure to take advantage!

Consider Summer Place also. It's 5 minutes or so to the hospital & I lived in a 2 bedroom duplex with a backyard (albeit a small one) for about $525/month. Pets were allowed which was a big plus for me. Free cable also.

Nothing has happened on here in awhile, and I don't want to study for physio. With that said, I heard that RRGirl has a smastic aorta. Just thought everyone should know.

Anyone live in a 2 or 3 bedroom house in Lubbock? On Average, how much are your utility bills per month (not including cable or internet)? I never lived in a house other than my parents', is it really different from an apartment?

Thanks

My husband and I live in a 3 bedroom house. Our electric bill is about $100/month and our water is about $60 (including watering our lawn).

The electric bills for my 2 bedroom house vary widely throughout the year. It was $80 this month and about $40 for gas heat.

Put it this way, if you live in a house, you will never want to live in an apartment ever again. I don't have to worry about pissing off my neighbors if my music, movies, or video games are too loud. Now I only have to worry about pissing off my wife from playing Guitar Hero too loud. That is, when she isn't playing it. 😉

The downside to some may be having to maintain a yard. However, I am a man and take pride in having the best damn lawn on the block... Except for my neighbor's lawn. 🙁 I think it's time to sabotage it with bleach...

Thanks for the responses.

Its funny how both of you mention the lawn, I dread doing anything with it. Currently the plan is to hire someone to cut the grass, but then I don't even think I am going to care enough to water it since I am renting.

My roommate and I rent a 3-3 duplex (we use the extra room as a study and a guest room for things like training weekend). Rent is $900 - including lawn care. Electric, utilities, water ends up being anywhere from $100-180 a month. We actually don't have cable cause the few shows we have time to watch are on TV you can get with bunny ears🙂
BIG HUGE ADVANTAGE of a house is my car has been in a garage for the three hail storms we've had recently!
Down side of a duplex over a house is when the neighbors have three small children. But the upside is they don't password protect their wireless internet.
I would recomend buying an extra freezer if you live with roommates in a house though. It is a huge time/money saver and helps you eat better food. Make a bunch of things up at the start of the year, freeze it, and then you're set. Whenever you do cook something, just make a lot of it and freeze it in individual portions. Then when you wake up 2 minutes before you leave for school, you can grab a lunch on the way out the door.
Okay now I'm just procrastinating. Look forward to meeting all of you this weekend!
