so i've been going through schaum's bio review and making flashcards of some of the sections i felt were lacking in the kaplan bb or that i didn't feel i had a good handle over. Seems as if schaum's goes into a LOT more detail than kaplan, and its taking a really long time to get through the sections, not to mention i'm not even sure if i need to know this much detail for the exam.

so for those of you who've taken the exam or gone through schaum's...is the detail in schaum's really necessary? or should i just go over kaplan bb again and make flashcards out of that, while just reading schaum's for review?

(just trying to use my time efficiently...the exam is in 3 weeks)

thanks in advance

Schaums in general is WAY too much detail(I should know, I read the damn thing like ten times over). The good chapters in Schaums are those that deal w/plants,ecology,origin of life, and evolution. Thats all you should be reading from that book. Use Kaplan for the rest.......

and buy DAT destroyer👍

thanks amsie.

yea i've just been going over topics like endocrinology and the different parts of the brain and what not in hopes of having the material stick the 2nd or 3rd time through, but its a lot of detail.

thanks for the advice.

I'm pretty much using Shaum's to supplement the Kaplan review notes. Sometimes the diagrams are clearer in the Shaum's or it just helps to get a different visual to reinforce the same ideas. Added on to the topics amsie mentioned, its particularly helping me with the circulatory, respiratory, immunology and nervous systems - i've found these sections have additional info that kaplan review notes dont fully cover but which appear in the subject/practice tests. Of course there are details in those sections you can avoid, but go through it and sift out things you know are excessive. Also, skim though the Shaum's solved problems, there are few tid bits here and there that are worth knowing.

I would suggest to have the Kaplan and Shaum's side by side, and whatever doesn't make sense in the Kaplan go thorough it in detail in the Shaums.

schaums is a good supplement for the bio section but its not possible to memorize everything in it. Skim through all the important topics and the ones not covered in the kaplan blue book and you should be fine. after going through a few practice tests, you should be able to figure out what to place emphasis on and focus on those things accordingly.
