A cardiologist is offering to let me observe his work; he says he'll let me read nuclear studies, echos, ECGs, a whole bunch of things except actually interacting w/ patients. He says he really wanted me to observe him interacting w/ patients, but the administrators won't let him.

Will this count as shadowing? What should I expect, and how should I act?

You should act like you're grateful for the opportunity, without kissing his @ss. Don't fawn or tell him he's smart (he knows that). Ask him to explain what he does and why, instead of suggesting new treatments/interventions. Show him you're interested in his work, instead of showing off how much you know about it.

I definitely plan to. And he does seem interested in my ideas, if only to explain why they're not feasable.

Agree w/above.
That is great you got this opportunity.
Would expect that you'll have a hard time getting in to anything directly patient-related. It's all because we have too many lawyers in the US. You'll run in to this problem (hospital administrator nixing any patient contact) throughout undergrad, which makes it hard for people to get "clniical experience". Damned lawyers...

I've consulted a lawyer, and all I need is the patient's permission...wonder why the administrators' don't understand this simple legal concept?
