I think sometimes it is OK to ask for a letter from a prof who you've asked for a grade bump in the past. I had an orgo prof who required us to use these clicker things to take attendance in class for points. I showed up every day to class but it showed me absent for like 6 days. Obviously there was a malfunction with the device. I got a B+ in the class and those 6 days would have gotten me my A- so I talked to her about it. She gave my the points and I later asked her for a letter. No harm done.
