i'm just curious what an A- is in other schools...cause here A- is equivalent to 3.7 which I guess is pretty low? i dunno... so, when you apply to med schools do adcoms look at your gpa computed by your school or do they look at this other thing called the amcas gpa? im just curious as to which will factor most...

An A- is a 3.7 at my school, too. The schools are gonna look at your AMCAS GPA, however, I think they calculate A minuses as 3.7 too, dont they?

A= 4
A- = 3.7
B+ = 3.3
B= 3.0

and so on at my school. I hear this is actually quite common.

That sounds terrible man. I mean, a B really isnt THAT bad of a grade. A B in a premed class means you were an above average student, yet a 3.0 bcmp is damn hard to get over for med school apps. *sigh* the life of a premed

Yep, you're misinformed. AMCAS definitely does the +/- thing, although they just give you 4 points for an A+. I really wish that they didn't, though, since my GPA was much higher on the Texas system, which doesn't do +/-.

but not every school gives A+, i never heard of a school giving A+ until i got onto this site. so i guess they do that to make things fair to everyone involved. a person could have gotten a 100 average in a class, but because of the school, cant get higher than an A, so it's not fair that somebody whos school does give A+ get's to have a higher GPA

But it seems for most schools that give A+ grades, A+s are equal to As (are far as GPA is concerned), right?

Bottom line, AMCAS doesn't recognize the difference between an A and an A+. Even if your GPA is higher at your school, the playing ground is leveled as far as AMCAS and med schools are concerned. It just sucks for schools don't have +/- at all. Then and only then are you screwed!

That my friends is why the MCAT exists. GPA is a pretty lousy measure of learning and problem solving skills that are crucial at the next level. GPA can be affected by how much you work, involvement with something other than a staring at a textbook, the professor, and even getting a bad test form on a final, illness, and etc. The MCAT is the measuring stick which can be applied to all.

I don't even want to hear that 'I'm a bad test taker crap but I have a high GPA' crap because you didn't get your inflated GPA by sloughing off on tests. Likely is it that you have awesome memorization skills and can puke back up the molecular weight of dung beetle crap to your professor on his exam but have poor problem solving skills. And I better not see the 'Well standardized tests are biased' stuff either. Yeah they are biased, but the bias is aganst stupid people.

lol, this just reminded me of the scene in the movie with leonardo dicaprio where he's running from the FBI cause he made some fake checks, and there's one scene where he's pretending to be a doctor, and he knows nothing, except he keeps saying "concur" because he saw a doc on tv say "concur."
