Hey guys!

At first I've to say I'm from Europe and so I'm not that familiar with the American health system, med-school and all those stuff, cause I guess, here in Europe it's very different, but as a student who later wants to work in the US, I used Google a bit and informed myself about residency in the US and everything I need to know, but, maybe as you know, there some topics and questions which Google, or any Website, can't answer, why I looked for a community like this in hope, that some of you can help me with these.

I'm aware, that when I finished med-school in Europe, I have to do at first the three USMLE steps, before I can apply at all hospitalsin every location that I suggest for my work and living place in the future and when I'm accepted I start my residency and so on, but that isn't really a topic I'm concerned at the moment, cause until then, I have a few years left and I guess, that's everything I can find somewhere else on the internet.

My current questions are about the different fieldsnand the duration about residency and also the average age for medical interns. I've heard that high-school ends when you're 18 and then you have to go to college for four more years, means 22 after college and then you have to atten dmed-school for also four years, makes 26 years when you have your MD, but I'm not sure…cause you know Google, isn't always that right. A topic that really concerns me is the residency, cause I've read everywhere that your first year's about rotation, I guess that's the time as an intern and in the next years you focus on your specific field, for example surgery. But I found a topic on the internet that said, you make your step 3 after the internship, so does this say for me, when I come to the US, already achieved my step 3 and the diploma, or whatever you'll get after finishing med-school, that I can skip this intern year and start right in my specific field?, cause that means for me, that when a residency duration is stated with for example 5 years, that I've only 4 left. Maybe I should mention, that I'm aware, that the residency duration depends on the field, also like the duration of a following fellowship. I only want to get this straight, so that I can make up a vague age up in my mind about when I'm finished.

On the other hand, there's my question about the different fields, cause as stupid as it sounds, I'm very interested in surgery as well as in psychiatry, two fields with not so many in common – I know. I've heard about a double residency, but someone told me, that you can do this only with two fields with something in common, but I don't have any examples, I only got this answer when I asked a bit in a community here in Europe. My dream would be to do a double residency in these two fields, but if this isn'tpossible, I have to make a decision and so my question is except from the work itself, what is the difference in working as a psychiatrist and working as asurgeon. Everything would be helpful, you know, from working hours, to job possibilities, also money, cause like I counted, when I'd be ready with my psychiatry residency, I'd be still stuck with a surgery residency and that means less money than working as an attending I guess and so on. I may should add, that I'm more than sure, that I'd add a fellowship after my residency, cause my interests are very specific and so I like child and adolescent psychiatry and neurosurgery the most. My favorite location would also be California,I don't know if something in the clinical departments depends on the states, so I thought I add this as well.

I hope, I didn't sound that weird, but nobody in Europe can really give me answers and help me a bit, so people who actually work everyday in the US are, in my opinion, the best to give me answers.

Some answers would be really nice. J

Kind regards

PS: I really wasn't sure where to put my topic, but I guessed the med-school area would be okay.

This site has good info on US residencies.

The intern year is part of your residency (psychiatry, surgery etc), you can't skip it. Intern just means a first year resident.

There's a dropdown box in the top right to choose other specialties...

good luck
