I know a few programs have closed this past year, the one I know for sure is berkshire. Does anyone know the others for sure?

Berkshire closed? That would be kind of a shame. They are one of the better small programs and often put out really good pathologists. If you are looking for programs to close that should not be one of them.

I agree, I think it had something to do w/ specimen volume, I don't think it had anything to do with the program itself.

The closure I know for sure about is Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. There was talk of a couple other programs closing, and when I compared what was said with what programs were available to be ranked on the NRMP website during the match, I concluded that two other programs were Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, Indiana. There may be other program closures, but those were the only ones I had looked up.

I guess the definitive answer will come whenever they update the ACGME website...they did it when 2 closed bringing the total from 149 to 147. Given the finite amount of programs compared to other residencies, I think program closure is more impactful.

I have spoken to an alumnus of the path program @ Conemaugh and he said that there is no way the program would ever close. The Associate Director and founder of Sunquest information systems, Dr. Sidney Goldblatt, just doesn't like the match. The program takes FMGs outside of the match year after year.

Hope this helps.

Per the Pathology Wiki, the New York Medical College at St Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center of New York program is closed as of this year.

I have heard about Ball State, Berkshire, and Texas Tech also closing. I have not heard anything about Conemaugh closing. All of the closed/closing programs are so listed on the pathology wiki directory here: http://pathinfo.wikia.com/wiki/Pathology_Fellowship_Directory

Really makes me wonder how they handle all the residents. I can imagine, esp w/ the NY programs, that's a significant amount of residents to find alternate sites of training. Hopefully it addresses some of the concerns in the forum of overtraining. @ 147 programs last count, that's a decent contraction.

St. Vincent's program had to close as the whole hospital's inpatient care was being shut down. St Vincent is one of the nation's most famous hospitals in the historic sense. It is a shame to see it go, but now that area is very affluent and the elite affluent residents in the area prefer the higher level of care offered by the large quarternary academic medical centers and academic physicians.

So the pathology program had no choice but to close. I read this article back in Feb.

In the case of Texas Tech, the program will be around until 2013, at which point they'll shut down...they've just stopped recruiting new residents. So c/o 2011, 2012, and 2013 will all finish the program but c/o 2014 (the current 1st years) will find homes at programs elsewhere.
