Hi guys,

Had a few questions about step 2 cs. can anyone please answer them?
thanks,

1 how to do smoking cessation in the most brief way. I know the standard sentences and all, I am just running out of time to go into details.

2 how do u explain DRE and pelvic exam to a pt in layman's terms

3 is it better to do counselling or exam if you were short on time.

1. "Mr/Mrs./Ms __________, I am very concerned about your cigarrette use. As you may or may not know, smoking increases your risk of developing heart disease, lung disease, and certain types of cancers. Now I can understand how difficult it may be to quit, however, by eliminating your smoking habit, you will definitely improve your health and life expectancy. Do you think that this is something that you could look into possibly doing"?

2. "Based on what you have told me so far and from what I examined, I would also like to include some additional exams to help me in making a proper diagnosis. First, I'd like to include a rectal exam, so that we can rule out any problems that may be stemming from the rectum, anus, and/or prostate. I would also like to include a pelvic examination so that we can investigate any possible problems that may come from your pelvic region".

3. I don't understand what you are asking, but based on what you asked, it's better to examine the patient than spend the entire time counseling. The counseling should only last for about 2 minutes and you should summarize what you found, what you are going to order, the counseling, and answering any questions that the patient may have.

Thank you. Yes that is what I was wondering about. If at 10-11 mins I know that I am not going to be able to complete 'all' PE, should I try and cover more of PE or move to counselling in the last 2 mins. I think it is clear from what you said. Counselling strictly limited to 2 mins.

thanks,
