  1. Medical Student
Hi everyone, I just found this forum and ive been reading it for the last couple of hours. Here is my situation. I will be graduating from undergrad with a BS in biochem/mol bio and my original plans were to attend medschool. As of recently I have been strongly leaning towards pharmacy instead. I went online looking for information about different pharm D programs however most of what i see are for student coming from highschool or for transfer students going into a 6 year pharm D program. I have emailed many schools however they are taking their time returning my emails.

My question is how many of you have a BS in something other then pharmacy and then attended a Pharm D program. And if you attended a school which already had a 6 year program how did they place you into that program.

Thanks in advance for anytype of advice you might be able to offer. I am going to go back and keep reading other posts.

What schools have you been looing at? I can only think of a handful of "6-year" pharmD programs. Uconn, St Louis, Albany... umm, that's it for me. Almost everyone here either has a BS in something else, or just did their pre-reqs and went to a 4 (or 3) year pharmacy program. Where are you located? Where are you interested in going? 👍

Wow thanks for that quick response. I am going into my junior year at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. I am located in New Jersey and was hoping to get into a pharm D program within about a 5 hour drive from here. Ive emailed Albany, USIP, Wilkes, Rutgers, Erie, Mylan, University of Pitt, and probably a few others. Off the top of my head I believer most of those offered 6 year programs and I emailed them inquiring about how I would be placed in them however only Wilkes returned my emails thus far.

The 6 year programs are really nothing more than doing your two years of undergrad there and as long as you make the grades you are guarenteed in to their pharm school.
The pharmd programs is 4 years.
I'd say at least 60% of my class had a BS coming in but I'm sure you still apply for a transfer b/c a prior degree is not required.
I "transferred" from UT to Samford after 2 years.

I have my BS in Biomedical Sciences and will be starting UF's School of Pharmacy in the fall. They offer a 6 year program (which is merely 2 years of undergrad/pre-reqs followed by 4 years of Pharm school). I don't think having a degree will hurt you any, especially since you probably already finished your pre-reqs while getting your degree. Good luck!

A lot of schools really DO have true 6-year programs. Almost all their spots are reserved for students coming into the school straight from high school. There might be like 20 spots for transfers. He's not talking about schools that also happen to offer pre pharmacy courses.

I know here, if you do your undergrad here and apply to pharm school you are accepted. You have an earlier foot in the door, earlier interviews, meetings in the pharm school with our admissions guy etc.
95(roughly)% of those who do undergrad here get in.

I understand like philidelphia has a 6 year program but you can also transfer in, the same way in shenandoah.

I was under the impression that the first two years are just the prereqs and have really nothing to do with pharmacy.

I applied to some 6 year program and from my understanding, if you have a bachelor degree in a life science, most likely you already completed their first 2 years of the 6 year degree program, meaning if you are accepted into that program, I think they would place you at year 3, so you would have 4 years left. But don't quote me on that. The best way is to contact the school directly.
Here in California, I think the majority of the pharmacy students have a bachelor degree if not more. There are some with masters and some with PhD. The overwhelming majority of students in my class have a bachelor degree in biology or biochemistry.

Thanks a lot guys/girls, this is starting to make a lot more sense to me now. So if I graduate from here with my BS in biochemistry and if i "transfer" into a 6 year pharm D program they will probably place me in the 3rd year of it assuming that my BS in biochem fullfilled any type of pre-reqs.

BBmuffin which school are you reffering to in philly? Temple or USIP?

I think I saw quite a few posts on accelerated programs those look very appealing i think im going to go find those posts...
