hello

how important is hospital employment on a med school app? i get sufficient clinical experience as
a volunteer, should i pursue employment as a CNA, LVN, PCT, transporter, etc?

i'm a freshman, i could start shadowing, but i'm not sure if i should start now or maybe wait, so
i dont have any big gaps in time on my app

so far, things i can put on my app are:

ocean lifeguarding
school honors program
asg senator
budget committee member
hobbies: surfing, guitar, tennis, running, reading
volunteering at hospital

the things i want to have done by the time i apply are:

start a club, maybe a community service club, not sure
volunteer at other locations in the hosp
hospital job with solid clinical exp
half marathon
mentoring, tutoring, counseling
non med volunteering, i have some ideas
research/pubs?
join honors society
present at a honors society conference
teachers assistant
maybe a mission trip
join a frat
shadowing many specialties
good LORs
mcat of course
do a tennis tournmanet or something like that
doing something with my musical ability
apply early

is it realistic getting all this stuff done?

is being a senator sufficent leadership or is my leadership lacking, how can i improve it?

if i do all/most of this stuff, and do a good job, wamc?

my gpa is good so far, a's.

is there anything i should add to my lists? anything to take off the list?

what should i be working on now?

any other tips, tricks, advice, hints, anything, please respond it all helps.

seeing that you are freshman, You can do all that on the list
I don't think you need to be hospital job like the one you listed above. again that just my opinion

Don't be such a premed gunner...

You do not need to land a job in a hospital setting to impress med school ADCOMS.

thank you very much for responding to my topic. i value your insight very much, however if you could answer some additional questions it would be much appreciated.

is my leadership sufficent or should i actively pursue gaining more leadership. is this area a weakpoint for mE?

is this a good list of things i should focus on doing? is there something i should add/delete?

i am in an anthro class where the final assignment is to present research to the class. if i were to present this research at a conference and become published, would it count as a publication even though it is not traditional lab research?

thank you

1) Being a senator and attending meetings where you vote once in awhile may not demonstrate much in the way of leadership. Starting a group and accomplishing good with it would be closer to true leadership provided you are managing groups of people.

2) Read this forum widely and fine-tune what you plan to do to fill the desirable categories of the application, keeping in mind that you need longevity in some activities. Helping you to select from a laundry list of many activities is outside the role of WAMC and better belongs in Pre-Med Allo if you can't make a decision.

3) If the research you do is in the nature of a term paper, that is not the type of research med schools are looking for. If you start with a hypothesis, write a research protocol, gather data, and come to new and original conclusions that add to mankind's knowledge, which is potentially publishable, or you present it with a poster or podium discussion, then that is research, and of value even though not in a science.

if you need to work then get a hospital job if you can. regarding frats: procceed with caution. you dont want their screw ups to become yours. stay away from any frats that are known for partying or hazing.
