If anybody is looking for a great read over the summer, I would strongly recommend Complications by Dr. Atul Gawande. I couldn't put it down. The book is about Dr. Gawande's general surgical residency and the life lessons he learns. There are great chapters on physician falliability and patient anonymity. Pick it up! you won't regret it!

Also, anybody have any other suggestions of books to read? I need to read something for enjoyment. I get tired of reading my advanced paramedic texts.

I found this book to be a good read. It has 8 true clinical stories that are down to earth.

enjoy!!

Thanks! I'll look into getting a copy!

Complications is a great book. Makes me want to avoid ANY surgery in the near future....

Another one I just finished with is Stiff by Mary Something. A whole book about the "curious lives of cadavers." It's about gross anatomy class, using cadavers in forensics, cadavers in car crash tests. Very interesting and was a best seller for a while. Witty.

I thought Complications was a great read. If you like Gawande's style, then read his articles in NEJM (Notes of a Surgeon). What I liked best was Gawande's refreshing attitude about undesirable outcomes and his clarity in writing.

Roach...Mary Roach ...it takes a pretty good writer to make a factual and historical account of the fates of dead bodies palatable to the general public. It's pretty interesting.

also forgot to mention any books by Laurie Garrett. She has one called the coming plague-- pulitzer prize winner I think.

Travels By Michael Crichton. He talks a lot about his days as a harvard med student (I had no idea he was an MD), and why he chose to leave medicine. Also, he talks about a lot of holistic/spirtual stuff that flies in the face of modern medicine. Approach with an open mind...

Thank you all so much for your replies. This should be enough to get me through the "dry spells," as it were. Thank you again!!!

Another book I enjoyed was "The Medical Detectives" by Berton Roueche. Epidemiology!

I second "War Hospital"! It was amazing.

Has "Flu" by Gina Kolata been mentioned? It's about the 1918 flu epidemic. Also really good.
