Hi, I have a quick question on hardship.

When I was a teenager ~ 15 years old, my father became disabled due to an abrupt neurodegenerative condition and had to retire from his job. Luckily, my father is a fiscally wise man, and we never suffered much financial hardship as a family.

However, I was the oldest child and begun taking up my father's normal responsibilities. I gained a lot of practical knowledge out of it, and the sequence has changed my life in multiple ways, but I do not know if it qualifies as "significant hardship". It certainly was the hardest family situation I've ever encountered in my short life, but am having trouble picking up the perspective here.

Some details: For a time me and my mother were uninsured due to the retirement and issues with the insurance companies around this time, and this placed great strain on my family. We were also terrified that the condition would be hereditary, but thankfully it turned out not to be. It was generally a nightmare for the family.

I believe I can write about it in a good way, but given that it revolves around my father's condition and not mine per se I wonder if its appropriate to write about.

If the effects of your father's illness hindered you in a way that could have possibly set you behind your peers I'd write about. So if taking on your father's duties at home negatively affected your performance in school I'd say that's a hardship.

I would say it did, I had significantly less time for extracurricular activities like sports and involvement in other school functions. I'm going to be honest though, my academics weren't affected as high school wasn't particularly challenging.
This could be the starting point for secondary essays about how you have addressed difficulties or coped with challenges.
I see, I have some other challenges that I really like writing about, so I may save this for specific hardship essays.
