So here's the deal. I'm taking my MCAT July 6th, so I will be submitting my AMCAS before that date. Do I choose the schools to apply to based on my MCAT practice test scores to get a general idea of what I will be scoring or have any of you guys done that in the past and found it hurtful/beneficial.

Just trying to get a good idea of it all.

Thanks.

Practice test scores are really your best guess at your real test score. I would use them as a rough guide to pick schools.

I'd say err on the side of caution and choose broadly, unless you've been getting 40's on your practice MCATs consistently. The real MCAT is nowhere near the practice, and my rule of thumb is, your real score is most likely 4 pts lower than your practice. Also depends on your GPA and EC's.

Best course of action would be to submit your AMCAS early with 1 school so that you can get verified quickly, and then once you get your score you can add on whatever schools you think your score will be competitive. You can add more schools at any time.

Actually, I'd say that for the most part, people score around their AAMC practice test average. The actual MCAT wasn't too much different from the newest AAMC practice tests, although you have to account for test day nerves. I'm sure the 4 points lower thing applies to some people, but it's not the norm.

I would submit to 1-3 school you'd apply to no matter what your score was. Just so you can get verified.

I took my MCAT July 6th of last year (2011)!! I submitted my application as soon as possible in early June so that it would get verified very quickly. The number of schools you apply to initially doesn't matter since I think the time you submit your secondary is more important. Just apply early.
