Hola

So I was talking to my adviser the and she said they wouldn't send my letters/committee letter until August because " it's fine to do that."

I have low stats, but really strong letters. Since I've already received secondaries, I'm assuming the schools have access to my application. The letters are supposed to steer the admissions away from my gpa and show them that I'm much more than the number. So if they've already seen my app, haven't they made a decision on me already?

It may be the case, as is for most, that I was automatically sent these secondaries. In that case, isn't there delayed letter delaying the completion of my app? I need those letters to be with my app so admissions knows I'm not that dumb.

Thoughts??

LORs will not compensate for low stats. That is wishful thinking.

If any of these schools screens prior to sending out secondaries, congratulations, they've looked at your app and decided specifically NOT to reject you yet. Those schools that do not screen have likely not so much as read your name. Regardless of when you submit your secondaries, your app will not be considered "complete" - and therefore go 100% unreviewed - until your letters are in. Considering the volume of apps received, it would be a huge waste of time for them to make decisions on applicants who may never even complete the application process in the first place.

Apart from the rare school that has a bizarre process (e.g., Mayo), most schools won't evaluate you until all components of your application are received.

Nothing will compensate. But they still will tell admissions why they should
Take me.

So you're saying that an app without letters is the same as an app with good letters??
Why so they ask for letters then?

Ok, so my advisers are still hurting me in that they are delaying the completion of my application then? Or is it too early to matter?

I guess, when does not having a fully completed application become a problem?

Thanks

Yes, they're making your application late, but I'm not sure if it would hurt you. The end of August is getting to the later side of things but you're by no means screwed.

Unfortunately, I don't know that there's any data breaking down acceptance rates as a function of GPA, MCAT, and date of submission, but logic and anecdotal evidence both support the notion that earlier is better. Yes, your application is incomplete until the letters are in, and yes, waiting too long will hurt you. For someone with lower stats, August is probably right on the threshold between "safe" and "late." It shouldn't break your application, but you definitely want to stay on top of it.
