Gents,

It's interesting, because when I watch surgical videos online (medlineplus and orlive etc.) they invariably are using anesthesiologists. I know this is a very small sample size, and could be considered "anecdotal", but I've only seen one situation in which the surgeon introduced a nurse anesthetist. Every other video I've watched has had "Dr. xyz, our anesthesiologist" doing the case. I've watched a fair amount of these videos.....lol

The question seems to be, is this coincidence? Again, I've only seen 1 (poss. 2 videos), out of 30 or so, in which they were using a CRNA. All the rest have had an MD/DO, and were introduced as such.

Or, might this be done purposely since these videos are often catered to the general, lay, public? In which case, they'd want to put their best foot forward, so to speak. Because, these numbers are far greater than what I've heard the ratio of MD/DO only groups to team models represent in reality. Also, it's not as if the MD/DO's are there, conveniently, upon intubation etc., because many of these introductions are quite informal and occur mid-case etc.

Any thoughts?

I know what happened..the people making the film were looking for someone...went to the breakroom and there stood an MDA. LOL, suprisingly no CRNA was to be found...they were doing the cases. How typical is that....I am only joking...I couldn't help it. I really think that they did it purposfully though...most lay public dont know about CRNA's, and who are the videos catered to MD's. Just my opinion

What the hell is a MDA?

What the hell is a MDA?

MDA = Medical Doctor Anesthesia

Nurse speak for Anesthesiologist.

I have yet to hear of anyone called a DOA(Dead On Arrival) so DO anesthesiologist are also referred to as MDAs

Another nurse expression I like is OLOGIST

usage "Are you a CRNA or an Ologist."

Hehe

I like the Ologist one, sounds like double secret special!

Funny, there is a large group here where they all refer to themselves as MDAs. When i asked if that was acceptable they simply said it was shorter and easier. To patients they refer to themselves as anesthesiologists.

The DOA would be funny as hell. Ive not med a DO who was an anesthetist, but if i ever do, I HAVE to say DOA!!

i find this hard to believe. where are you? or, instead why don't you go to the asa website and provide a link that shows us this is an endorsed acronym for our profession.

Huge metropolitian area in the south west.

Well, lesse, Otho surgeons call themselves "Carpenters" but thats not "approved" either. Many hospitals have MDA clearly written on the anesthesia paperwork as well.

This isnt a debate, im telling you they use the term i could care less if you believe me.
