  1. Pre-Health (Field Undecided)
Ok I have an issue with my Major, among a few other Q's I will keep it simple 1, and 2 are most important. This is my first time posting here BTW bare with me Thanks Guys.

I have a few Q's

1. Will a psycholgy major hurt my opportunity to be accepted into Pod school. (is it possible it could be a plus)

2. Will being a Community college 2 year transfer put me at a big disadvantage.

3. How much is courseload taken into consideration for Podiatry school

Im really interested in Podiatry for many reasons I really like the variety available to podiatrist from Derm, To surgery, preventative care, Biomechanics and the list goes on But I noticed that at a Pod school like DMU all of the current students listed in the class profile were Biology majors 😕 http://www.dmu.edu/pm/class-profile/ I just wouldnt want to get denied due to my major I hear for Med schools it doesnt matter what major you have But I have no data to back this for Pod. Im about to be a sophmore by the way taking summer classes. I have a 3.7(and climbing) so far but with no pre reqs done yet I will be a Sophmore this fall.

The answer to both questions 1 and 2 is: no.

Course load is certainly considered by the admissions committee.

Is the period key on your keyboard not working?

1. No. Your major is irrelevant. You could apply to Pod school as a Chinese History major and they wouldn't care. What matters (under my impression) are that you have completed the prerequisites and your science/pre-req GPA. Upper-division science GPA can have a lot of bearing too.

2. No.

3. I'm not sure what exactly you mean by that. Certainly it is better to take fewer classes at a time and do well than to take too many classes at once and do average.

Thats a nice GPA but I wouldn't put too much weight on it until you start taking your pre-reqs and other science classes. Work on your pre-reqs and do well and you should be fine.

Your 3.7 right now is pretty irrelevant as you will not begin the application process for two more years - or four semesters of grades. This is especially true considering you've taken no "hard" science courses and presumably only "soft" sciences like psych.

I agree with everyone else: your major doesn't matter

Yeah my current GPA was just for a little extra information. I only got a few B's for classes I took while in High School. I have had a 4.0 first year however still rather irrelevant at this point. Thanks for the input do you guys have any kind of data to prove this by chance.

Another thing is since my CC only offers around 3 psych courses that transfer, when I get to my University likely UNCCH, or ECU. If im going to complete my major in time I will only be able to squeeze in about 2 upper div. Bio courses one in my summer after junior year while MCAT studying and maybe one my senior year im not sure if those would even be on my app since I plan to apply in the summer before senior year. Im just deciding whether to Major in Biology or Psych I like both (Psych more) and with that circumstance(No upper bio on app along with other Q's) I wouldnt want to be at a disadvantage.

Thanks again. See the period at the end that time lol.

If you like psych more, stick with that. I can't provide you with "data" about entering majors except that I promise pod schools will not look down on you for being a psych major.

Also, as long as most of your prereqs are done by the time you apply, and you got good grades in them, you are golden. Upper division for pod school is only if you did poorly with prereqs and want to prove yourself to adcoms or to "help" you once you're in the school (or MCAT, like genetics, biochem, etc). Otherwise, not necessary.

I'm a psych major from CUNY brooklyn college which is a city college. I got into Temple and NYCPM and took the minimum requirements in the hard sciences. Got a B- in physics 1 and 2 and orgo 1 and 2. had no issue getting accepted and was granted scholarships to both. I can't speak for DMU but I dont think you should have a problem.
Also, use your psychology major to your advantage in your personal statement and your interviews. Part of psycholog is how humans connect with each other and communicate. Understanding those can help foster trust with your future patient and help with diagnoses.

Hey thanks alot for this one. Its great to hear from someone that was is a similar situation to what I will be in, Except for the fact that I will be a 2 yr CC transfer (but shouldnt be an issue), That really reaffirms what the previous posters said and its quite relieving. Being a psych major can really be an asset as a practicing physician as you mentioned. What was your GPA if you dont mind me asking.

Not everyone in the DMU Class of 2015 is a Biology Major.

In regards to your questions; I essentially agree with what everyone else has said.

To BioPod, I know I kind of exagerated but if you look on the class profile on the website you will be clicking on about 10 students before you see a major outside of biology and even then the major will be something like biomedical science or biological science. And I guess the bright side is that this is only some of the students not the whole class maybe a Non science is in there somewhere + there are other schools but it can really raise an eyebrow :eyebrow:
