alrighty! i'm supposed to be shipping my butt off to college sometime this year (i should be getting my acceptance/ rejection letters sometime this april...) and i'm kinda confused about what i should do 😕 ...i mean, i know i'm going to major in biology, but i'm between minors...
for someone whos plans are to go to med school and hopefully become a doctor after college, what would you consider as the best path:
1. major in bio, minor in business, and take a couple of biochem/ chem classes to better my understanding of the science field... or
2. major in bio, minor in something more closely related to biology, and take a couple of business/ finance classes...or
3. forget about all of this and turn my efforts towards building a giant chocolate castle...that way i would live in a castle and get to eat chocolate all at the same time...YAY!
thanks for all your information!

p.s. get the joke with the whole "major" question thing...funny, right?!

You'll learn more when you get to college, but basically you can major in anything you want as long as you take the pre-requisite courses for whatever med schools you want to apply to. That's usually some bio, some general chemistry, some organic chemistry, maybe a calculus class, and maybe an english class. You don't have to minor in anything at all unless your particular University requires it. Most pre-meds are biology majors, because that's the easiest major to fulfill all the pre-reqs with, but that just means you'll stand out more if you major in something else.

Make yourself happy and get as close to a 4.0 as possible to open as many doors as you can.

as everyone said, major in what interests you (you don't even have to do bio if it's not your favorite). also, you don't have to decide just now. take your distribution/general ed requirements first, picking the most fun-sounding courses. if any turn you on, take more of that subject and you may have a minor before you know it.

please rethink the whole "pre-med" thing. there are many rewarding careers to be had outside of medicine. as for your major/minor, you must be a real tool if you're worried about those things as a high school senior. study what you want; I recommend against biology as it is too limiting and will not open doors for you should you not go to med school. your minor is irrelevant and nobody really cares about it.

p.s. a minor in business, or even a major in business, will not make you business savvy -- only real-world experience will. And it will certainly not help you run a successful medical practice.

Ok, I guess I understand wanting all the info you can get, but do any of you guys remember being concerned enough about what a bunch of *****s on a pre-med forum thought to decide my majoy based on it? I honestly cant remember ever ASKING anyone what they thought I should major in...their opinion doesnt really matter, its my own life. I see threads like this all the time, What school should I go to, what classes to take, what major, and frankly it disturbs me. This post is kinda harsh, but all of you guys kinda need to get some spine and some individuality, and most importantly some SELF CONFIDENCE, and just make some choices in life. I can see an interview where they ask why you chose your unique major and you say "Well, vhawk01 on SDN thought it was a good idea."

 the interview question was pretty funny. i think people ask these questions though because they want real answers. Look, someone had to tell them that biology would be the way to go, probably a councelor, and therefore they come here to find out what they should REALLY do. Yes the common sense answer is do what you want to do, but still some people dont know that answer. A lot of pre-meds, including myself, end up in bio majors cause they were not told before hand they could major in anything they wanted to. I didn't know until i went to a pre-med conference and by then I was already over my head with bio classes. I may have majored in music in retrospect. I still love my major though, and don't really regret it, just regret not knowing i could have chose something else. If that makes any sense at all  OKAy but we are forgetting something, what if they really like bio? It is assumed right away that if you are going into bio for pre-med that you really dont have an interest in it, and you are just doing it because of the credits....What if they really have a passion for it? I mean is it so wierd to have that passion? I mean we are going towards the goal of being doctors right? Which will be dealing with biology all the time right? PASSION OR NO PASSION, just do what your heart says to do!!! it will never steer you wrong.
