From the NY Times website:
Dr. Sanjay Gupta, the CNN medical correspondent who was reportedly offered the position of surgeon general by Barack Obama last month, was pressed into duty on inauguration day when Senator Edward M. Kennedy collapsed at a Congressional luncheon.
Dr. Gupta performed a from-a-distance assessment of the patient by phone on CNN, and later appeared on camera from Atlanta to discuss the health scare. Dr. Gupta is the networks chief medical correspondent and a practicing neurosurgeon.
Since reports surfaced two weeks ago that Dr. Gupta had been offered the countrys No. 1 public health position, media watchers have wondered how CNN would handle his job opportunity. He continues to host his weekend health and wellness show, House Call, and he appeared on CNN last week to talk about hypothermia in the wake of the plane crash in the Hudson River.
But Dr. Gupta stopped covering any stories related to health policy as soon as he told his bosses, in mid-December, about the offer from Mr. Obama. When reached on Tuesday, a CNN spokeswoman reiterated that policy.
