A new medical school in Pittsburgh

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

It appears that this school is not technically on the LCME radar yet. The website hasn't been updated since October, though so it's possible that they have reached Step I. But they are still not near enrolling their first class. You're probably looking at 2-3 years (at least) before WPA is an option for applicants.

I considered a faculty position at Pitt. It's a fantastic and financially sound system. Pittsburgh... not for me.🙁

What's wrong with Pittsburgh? :/ It's a great place for a (not very rich) young person or family to live. Food and housing is cheap and it's in all an interesting city. Drawback right now is the weather.

Agreed, there's no way they're going to start taking apps this year. There are way more logistics to be worked out before they can actually start accepting anyone.

And the website design hasn't been updated since 1994 it looks like...

Ok, lets see if applying out of Pennsylvania is really that bad. The data is from the AAMC website, for 2010 applicants.

School and % IS matriculants
Commonwealth- 70.8
Drexel- 36.9
Jefferson- 43.5
Penn State- 49.7
Penn- 21.6
Pitt- 26.4
Temple- 55.6

Total number of all Pennsylvania applicants- 1,493
Total number of IS Pennsylvania matriculants- 500
Total IS matriculated/all IS applicants- 34%

Now compare that 34% to some of the states out west using the same AAMC data:
Oregon- 22%
Washington- 16%
Colorado- 19%
Utah- 13%
Arizona- 22%
California- 17%

Clearly things in Pennsylvania are not as bad as some other states. Your odds of getting in are much better there than in the west as there are so few IS seats for the number of IS applicants. And if you think you have it worse than Californians, as Lee Corso would say- "not so fast my friend"...

Note: data assumes all applicants within a state applied to all schools within that state. That is not really the case, but there is no way to assimilate the AAMC data otherwise in states with multiple schools. Thus the ratios will be slightly higher but should be proportional across the board as same base data was used for calculations.

Let's get real here.

The Commonwealth...I don't even think it's accredited.

Temple...woop de doo, a slight in state preference...too bad it's medical students accrue some of the largest debt in the country

Drexel...see above

Jefferson...good stuff

Penn State....good stuff

I think the biggest beef us PA residents have is that neither Pitt or UPenn care if you're in state.

Jefferson's students accumulate insane debt as well... similar level as Drexel and Temple.

Argh. Hopefully it takes its first class in the next couple of years...

..yeah only way I'd apply here is if they offer a free ride for the first class...none of that insane Drexel/Temple/Jefferson tuition garbage

Or just a relatively inexpensive tuition.

I really hope there's another medical school in PA before I apply. For the sake of PA residents...
