There is so much pressure, competition, and stress in our lives. Whether it be a pre-med, med student, resident, or doctor, we likely chose this path because we are ambitious, hard-working, and success driven. Unfortunately, what comes with this personality is the likelihood of being let down, coming up short, and failing in at least one thing in our lives. Some of these let-downs recently happened to me which, for awhile, I let discourage me and allow me to second guess my abilities to become what I aspire to be.

I made this thread to help give that motivational kick back in those who are down. We've all been there at one point or another, and, at least for me, it can take as much as one little quote that changes my entire perspective on everything. Whether you're getting low scores on your MCAT or practice MCAT tests, a "GPA-wrecking" semester, rejection from a school, or fired from you're job, many of you are simply looking for some sort of pick-me-up, advice or verification to reassure that you are still OK. I PROMISE, unless you're discouraged because you just got convicted of murder or rape...you are OK!!

Below are a few quotes that I read every time I'm feeling discouraged, lazy, or unmotivated. You might have seen some of them (or all of them), but that doesn't matter. I've seen them all many times and it still stirs the same drive back up every time I read them...out of site, out of mind I guess.

"No matter what the setback, always move forward. If you fail a task, move forward. If your significant other breaks your heart, move forward. If someone close to you passes away, allow yourself a set time to grieve...and then move forward. Whatever circumstances exist, if we do not keep moving forward, we are bound to let life pass us by."

"True failure is getting kicked down and staying there"

"Always we hear the cry from teenagers 'What can we do, where can we go?'...My answer is, 'Go home, mow the lawn, wash the windows, learn to cook, build a raft, get a job, visit the sick, study your lessons, and after you've finished, read a book. Your town does not owe you recreational facilities and your parents do not owe you fun. The world does not owe you a living, you owe the world something. You owe it your time, energy and talent so that no one will be at war, in poverty, or sick and lonely again.' In other words, grow up, stop being a cry baby, get out of your dream world and develop a backbone, not a wishbone. Start behaving like a responsible person. You are important and you are needed. It's too late to sit around and wait for somebody to do something someday. Someday is NOW and somebody is YOU!".

"Life never gets easier, you just get better"

"A river cuts through a rock not because of its power but its persistence."

"An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward. So when life is dragging you back with difficulties, it means that it's going to launch you into something great. So just keep focus and keep aiming."

I hope this post helps someone out there! 😀

Thank you. Some of us really need this. 👍 Good luck!

It really is important to separate the "reality" of SDN from actual reality. Thanks for the post TxLongHorn.

Survivor DO

Here's one:

"If you think it can't be done, you know yourself pretty well"

I just play "I'll Make a Man out of You" from Mulan on repeat while finishing up my final papers for the semester.

...like right now.

... :sob:

"A river cuts through a rock not because of its power but its persistence."

I like that. I recently got good news, after a year of dead ends and discouragement. I'm glad I talked to as many people as I did (you never know who you know knows), and in hindsight I wish I utilized my connections more effectively.

Aww OP, I think this is cute and such a nice departure from what normally goes on over here. I know this will help someone. Thanks for being positive!!

Thank you! Yeah I didn't want to be cheesy, but I've personally been going through some really bad stuff all at once...and I know positive energy and quotes like these helped get me through so I figured I would share it. 🙂

I'm totally with ya, OP. I started a happiness thread like this a few months ago. I think these are great!

I've struggled long enough in my life to know that happiness and fulfillment are about more than worldly success. I took my third exam in Gen Chem 2 a week ago, and was sure that I'd failed it; as I was walking up the stairs to collect my exam, I had this conversation in my head with God about how even if I'd failed chemistry - even if I never got into medical school - I knew I had within me the power to be happy everywhere and anywhere, because I was finally starting to understand serenity.

And you know, I picked up my exam and I'd absolutely aced it. I sorta collapsed in the hallway when I saw it, but funnily enough I'm less proud of the grade than I am of the fact that I was ready in my heart to be happy whether or not I had succeeded.

Thanks OP! We need some of this over in Vet Med. I love this one:

"An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward. So when life is dragging you back with difficulties, it means that it's going to launch you into something great. So just keep focus and keep aiming."

The positivity in this thread is nauseating. Good luck, err body.

Its great!

I was really stressing out this cycle. When we are trying so hard, focusing all of our efforts on this dream, its easy to forget what truly matters. When I was deep in the middle of the process, with only 1 MD waitlist, I had a cancer scare. Although I'm a healthy male in his mid twenties, I had a mass in my chest. After a couple months of doctors appts and finally a surgery, I found out it was benign. But let me tell you, when you're in that situation, you remember what truly matters. Don't forget what makes you who you are and remember, things could always be so much worse.
