So I've taken cell/molecular bio. Got a C...cause the teacher gave ridiculous tests. (I know I should only blame myself) I did however study my ass off and almost got a B. I'll retake in the fall though. But my question is... is molecular/cell bio vital to doing well in anatomy and physiology? I understand cell bio concepts just didn't do so hot on the tests. What do you think because I'm considering A&P with an awesome professor during the summer. Thanks! You guys have been so important and helpful to me!!!!!!!!

Don't bother retaking if that's your only C so far - that would probably just be a waste of time and money.

Anatomy seems like it would be on a non-cellular level for the most part, ad physiology is pretty specific about what it covers. I don't think that there will be any serious overlap between the two classes.

Anatomy will certainly be difficult though - lots of memorization - so be prepared for that!

Cell and molecular bio is definitely not necessary for anatomy and physiology (I took A&P first)...I got a C in an important class (organic chem), and I retook it and got an A. I agree that it probably isn't necessary to retake the class if it's your only C...but if your grades are average, I would consider it. For me, getting an A in it really didn't change my GPA (maybe by 0.02), but I felt it important to show my vet schools that I was able to get an A in the class. Good luck!

Retaking that class would be pointless, IMO. It's not that important. They will teach you what you need to know in vet school. Spend the time taking another pre-req! C's aren't a deal-breaker. Look at other people's stats. I had 3-4 (can't remember) C's in undergrad and I got into vet school first try. Don't fret!

I majored in human physiology and never took cell bio...so I'd say it's possible 😉. I did take cell physiology, but very late in college after many many A&P courses.

I know some Canadian schools don't even average them. Once you take a class and obtain a grade in it, that's it.

Say, for example, you have a low grade in a pre-requisite like physics and want to replace it with a higher mark. You have to do a higher level physics class and obtain a better mark in it in order to replace it. The policy really lights a fire under your ass to make sure you study hard and do well the first time 🙂

I found cell bio to be a bit of a letdown in terms of knowledge that can be applied towards vet school courses. Much of the class was simply a slightly more detailed look at metabolism & cell division from intro bio.

I did enjoy the few days we spent on material involving how cell biology applied towards biomedicine, such as diabetes and the function of insulin, carcinogens and their mechanism(s) of action, metabolic dysfunction, and how various drug therapies worked, but by and large I don't think anything from the class is necessary to succeed in anatomy and physiology.

Thanks again for all the help guys! The counselors at my school are 😱 and another thing that sucks is that cell bio was a pre-req before any other science classes like a&p or micro. I just feel so dumb right now that I couldn't swing that B that I was so close to. That's kind of why I wanted to re-take it but I've been hearing that cell/molecular bio is not very vital to those other classes so I'm getting a wee bit relieved 🙂 Once again thanks for so much informative and positive feedback!

My humble opinion? I would not worry about retaking Cell if you got what knowledge you needed out of the class. Yes, you will probably actually use some of the molecular stuff at a later date, but not to the full extent they taught you in the class. Cell is a bit over the top for our uses, at least here at Colo State. Here at least, it is taught from a molecular perspective, and unless you are planning to go into say a PhD in neuroreceptors, taste cell transduction or whatever, you probably already know all you will ever need on the subject. So simply move on, and ace the rest of your classes. This coming from someone who did repeat/delete Cell, and also has just finished a year of grad level molecular phys. Adcoms know there will always be those white elephant classes that an otherwise excellent candidate simply trips on. As long as they are the exception rather than the rule, you are better off moving on, and killing the follow-up classes instead. That will prove your academic merit far better than staying in the same rut and redoing past mistakes. That is what I have been told. A&P is far more important for our purposes.

Are you referring to the phrase 'elephant in the room'? Because White Elephant doesn't really make sense here...unless there's a use I'm unaware of? (seriously curious, not nitpicking). I've always heard the phrase "White Elephant" refer to something that's actually quite good, but a pain to keep up with.

I totally forgot to reply to this before but the school I would be transferring to next spring would not average the re-taken class with the original it would just take the grade after it was re-taken. So that is the only reason I'm leaning towards re-taking it.

Fine, whatever ladies. 🙄 My understanding of the definition was as the rare unusual example. So you know what I meant -- I am not an English Lit major; I have far more important things to do with my life, even if I was in fact named after a literary hero so to speak.
