Hello,
So I interviewed at a school several months ago and have been waiting on an acceptance. It is my state school and my number one option. I have kept the admissions committee up to date on my current activities (including a possible publication currently under review). However, acceptances are sent out on certain dates and I unfortunately did not make it this past date.
I know a physician who teaches the medical students and residents at this institution. He really wants me to get in, but I have never worked with him. However, he is adamant about me sending the email of the medical school to him so he can put in a good word for me. I wasn’t sure about whether or not I should do this. What do you guys think?

People usually overestimate their own importance and sway. The effect of these types of correspondence are typically neutral, and since this physician has never worked with you before, what can they meaningfully/objectively add to your application?

Are there more dates in which admission decisions will be sent out? If so, then timing wise, sending this Hail Mary between the start of waitlist movement and your CTE deadline will probably give you the best yield. Just my thoughts

So the next acceptance date is next month after which a waitlist will be generated. I do work with a clinical researcher/physician in the institution mentioned above who I have been thinking about asking to put in a good word for me. How would you recommend I time this? Should I ask my PI now so he can send something before the next and final acceptance date or should I use that “weapon” if I am one of the unfortunate ones on the waitlist?

Why didn’t your PI send a letter with your application? Or if it’s a new thing with one of your updates?

Yeah so I started working with him like 3-4 months ago. I was hesitant to ask but now that I’ve coauthored a paper that is under review, I feel like I have more leverage to ask. I guess I should ask him immediately then?
