Hey all. I have been accepted to Murdoch for vet med and figured this was the best place to throw out a couple questions. Any feedback greatly appreciated!

1) Has anyone been to Perth and know what the city/school is like?

2) Canadian Vet Salaries?? Does anyone have reliable info on this? Small animal vs large, specialists etc.... I did some calculations based on a few figures and it looked like I wouldn't be able to pay off my debt until I'm 50! ouch!!! Any info on this one would be extremely helpful!

3) I imagine there are a few threads on this one but if anyone cares to elaborate about what kind of workload can be expected in vet school. I'm prepared to declare war on my brain but what are we really talking about here?

4) Your favorite colour?

Guess that's it!
Thanks for the input! :)

Hello Hoffee and welcome! I am currently a student at Murdoch so I think I can tell you a little bit about it.

1.) Perth and the surrounding area has about 1.4 million people, but it feels really small. The whole area is split into little suburbs, each with it's own shopping centres and what not. Most stores close at 5 pm everyday except for Thursdays when they close at 9 pm. Most stores are not open on Sunday. If you are looking for housing, look for the suburbs of Kardinya, Bull Creek, Hamilton Hill, Murdoch, and Bibra Lake. The vet school is going through some changes right now so things are a little chaotic at the moment. They just changed the vet program from a 5 year program to a 6 year program. You will be entering the new program, which is actually better than the old one. You will get 6 extra months to do clinicals and you get to pick a specialty to focus on. They are also in the process of building a new surgical centre, which they have promised to be up and running by 2009. The school has an awesome anatomy museum as well, which you will live in for about two years.

2.) Can't help you with this one.

3.) Since the program you will be in will be different from what I am in, I am not sure what classes you take and when you take them. I can say though, that the first three years will be a little rough. Anatomy is one class that you cannot slack on. Murdoch is nice in the fact that they give you three weeks off during the semester (pretty much a week off after four weeks of teaching). They call these study breaks and if you use them to study, then you can pretty much get by only studying during that time (although I do suggest keeping on top of things and not leaving them till the study breaks).

4.) My favorite colour? All of them but brown.

Hope this helps! PM me if you have additional questions.

I can't answer right now, but I'm heading to Perth on Saturday and will be there from the 23rd to the 25th.

Though it isn't my main purpose for the trip, I think it would be cool to check out the vet school while I'm in the area for a few days.

So... I'll get back to you?

ETA: Congrats on the acceptance!!
