Hi,

I'm certain most of us have taken out a loan on our way through undergrad. Do loan companies for professional students transfer the undergrad loan on top of the loan required for dental school? Makes since to me...but I'd like some clarifcation from the more exprerienced "almost doctors" here 🙂

I'm not an almost-doctor or anything, but I can answer your question.

As long as you are not out of undergrad longer than 6 months, though, you will not have to start paying off your undergrad education loans until you finish dental school. If your undergrad loans include Stafford subsidized, the government will continue paying your interest until you finish dental school.

Your loans do not transfer, in the sense that your record of debt is moved from one institution to another. If your undergrad loans were with Bank X, they will always be until you pay them off or consolidate. When you start dental school, if Bank X is going to be your lender, then you just start digging a deeper hole. If it's a new lender, then you start a new hole, but the Bank X hole is still there. Either way, you don't have to start filling those holes back in until dental school is finished.

I think if your question is whether you have to start paying for your undergrad loan while in youre in a dental school (after you graduate from college), then i think the answer is no. I believe as long as your continue your education then you'll be paying for the loans after you're done with your education (so pay for both undergrad / dental schools once you're done with dental schools)

Thank you for the info. A lot of candidates don't meet the cut the first round after thweir senior year. In that sense, loans kick in 6 months after graduation, right? So, what if a candidate makes it the second round, can he/she stop paying, or put that loan on hold and create a new loan for dental school. Or dig a deeper hole w/ the first loan as suggested prior?
