I'm an IMG who plans to apply this year, I understand that the LoRP for the ERAS 2016 will open in late may, and the application process will start mid September, aren't my LoR considered supporting documents that are supposed to be ready by September with all my other documents?

Typically, when should I ask my supervisor for a LoR? September?, or later than that?

I believe you are confused about the timeline. ECFMG starts generating tokens in late June, which has already happened. You can apply for and get a token now. Once you have your token, you can start your application. You can then request LOR's, which your letter writers can upload via the LoRP. The LoRP is open right now. In mid-September you can start applying to programs, but we do not get any applications until Oct 1 (so whether you apply on Sept 15 or Sept 30th doesn't matter at all).

So, you should get a token now and start working on your application. You should request letters starting now, and you want all of your letters submitted by mid-september so you can assign them to programs for an Oct 1 application date. You can apply after Oct 1, but programs may use your date of application as a sign of how interested / organized / self motivated you are.
