What is it called when you can maintain oxygen saturation without ventilation? I remember reading that with high flow tracheal oxygen one can maintain a decent o2 sat in the face of not breathing although respiratory acidosis does develop. Thank you so much for any help.

I've done that during a brain death examination. Stop the vent, maintain the oxygen for about 8 minutes (off-hand), take an ABG before and after. If the pCO2 goes way up without stimulating them to breath, then you have a strong component in favor of brain death.
