Last night on House when House thought he had Schizophrenia (seeing Amber and all), he was afraid he couldn't be a doctor anymore because he would have to take Anti-psychotic medication. Is it true that you can not be a doctor if you take Anti-psychotic medication?

Wait... something on House wasn't exactly on par with reality? Now I don't know what to believe in.

I've been treating myself for lupus for years because of a patient on House that had a fever and trouble breathing. I just figured that'd be easier than going to a real doctor.

Thanks for the responses, I thought it was kind of odd, but then again you would think people research for TV shows.

Also, visual hallucinations are rare with schizophrenics. They usually have auditory type.

Overall house has a good deal of medical consultation...Sound like they just wanted to "spice" it up for the lay public and succeed with the jaw dropping affect...
Remember ratings are everything..

If you truly have schizophrenia, you'll probably be collecting disability. Then, you may be looking for some non-clinical opportunities (which often means that you can still collect disability - depending on the type of coverage you get).

Did anyone also catch the fact that he told Wilson he was seeing Kutner but after the insulin shock thing House says "she" & then Wilson repeats it.
Unless he told Wilson in the few seconds that I missed since I didn't switch over from my "KillZone" fast enough. 🙂

There was a point in the show that he told Wilson who it was.

Hah, I dispensed just about every anti-psychotic/schizophrenic/stabilization drug known to physicians. I loved the one that was/is a prominent one that we couldn't understand how she was even standing with all the stuff she was taking. Never saw her eyes because she always had those big glasses on and would never look at us. Always down and to the side. SHe was a bit strange.

Worst part was she was prescribing most of them to herself, though she definitely had originals from a psychiatrist.

Antipsychotic medication in and of itself will not prevent you from practicing medicine. I think it's unlikely a patient with a diagnosis of schizophrenia would be able to function as a physician, however. I'm not sure if you would even be allowed to try with that diagnosis.

Anyway, as a crack diagnostician, House should have known that schizophrenia cannot be diagnosed without a 6 month persistence of symptoms. Symptoms <1 mo. is Brief Psychotic Episode.

Boom. Roasted.

Um, if I had a persistent psychotic episode where my hallucinogenic other half was purposefully killing my patients... I would probably CHOOSE to refrain from practicing medicine.

Whoa what happened there, please delete lol sorry

I think I might've just had a psychotic episode there lol, I would delete it myself if I could.

It isn't possible to have hallucinations as incredibly detailed and realistic (as well as aggravating) as on House, is it? I mean, neural tissue is pretty powerful, but in order to create an illusion of an entire person complete with dialog, smell, etc wouldn't leave much gray matter left for doing anything else.

I had a cousin, who when she had her episodes, said that newscasters on Tv would stop reading the news and talk to her. It was freaky.

There is no way to quantify how realistic a hallucination can be, but they can certainly be real enough that the patient completely believes them. Your brain is capable of rendering things in a completely realistic manner. Everything you sense is just electrical impulses generated by sensory neurons and interpreted by your brain. You do this without even thinking about it. In other words, if something went wrong with your circuitry, you could easily render hallucinations on top of the background environment without using all of your gray matter. You could be hallucinating this message right now. There is no way to really know.

That'd be hard to differentiate (if it were a hallucination) from referential thinking.

People on House think you can't be a doctor if you take antibiotics, for chrissakes. (Neurosyphilis episode, anyone?)

None of the psychiatric disorders can be diagnosed for sure while under the influence of a substance.

Drugs are bad, but is persistent vicodin abuse really capable of the kind of hallucinations illustrated on the show? In the season finale, let's just say that House's hallucinations grew to an incredibly detailed level.

I though opioids just trigger opioid receptors in places like the periaqueductal grey. They wouldn't be able to cause complex illusions. LSD or some other hallucinogen would be needed.

Eh. They never said he couldn't be a doctor because of the antibiotics - it was because he was screwing with them to make it seem like the neurosyphillis was what made him who he was. The reason house is considered "great" is because HOW he deals with cases, he's mean and brilliant and risky. He was acting "nicer" and "safer" as a result of the antibiotics so they were discussing their concerns that he would no longer be the kind of doctor that he was before. No one ever said you couldn't practice medicine on it.

But then no one ever said House was completely realistic either, thats just not one of their many mistakes. The one that annoys me most is the episode where Foreman almost dies of Naegleria. There is no treatment - he should have died. Aside from the ones where they screw up blood transfusion explanations its definitely one of their worst.

As far as the OP - Wilson telling him he can't practice anymore I think thats more because of WHAT he was hallucinating about - not the meds. If it was just the vicodin it wouldn't be an issue but if he was constantly hallucinating how would he ever know what was real. Considering his rather specialized practice, and risk taking it would be difficult for him to continue practicing. Or thats how I took it.

No clue if vicodin could cause what ultimately happened in the season finale. That was nuts. I have a feeling its supposed to be a combination of the vicodin, a mild psychosis due to the death of Kutner, and the crazyness that was always there.

death of Kutner

I didn't know about this 🙁 I'm watching them all from the beginning and I'm only in season 4. I'll miss Kal Penn and his character!

I'm sorry! That was like 5 weeks ago so I wasn't really thinking of it as a spoiler anymore.

KUTNER doesn't die! 🙂 Ok that was just a pathetic attempt. Sorry I didn't mean to spoil things for you.

If I were you I would avoid reading any threads about house until at least you get to the end of season 4. If people start talking about the past 4 or so episodes you're going to end up reading another big give away.

It's okay, I don't care about any characters except Kutner and Wilson anyway.

Anyway, knowing House it will probably turn out to be another hallucination or a faked death or something.

Well when you get there - look up Kal Penn on the internet. You'll see why.

Holy shiznit, at first when I read this I thought you were saying Kal Penn was dead! Well I'm happy enough for him that I can forgive him for abandoning me with House. I guess I'll just have Wilson to rely on now...

Whoa so who saw the finale, I didn't see the lipstick coming til the end, that was nice, I don't think they did a good job with the flashbacks though 🙂

Is there some corellation between intelligence and how realistic the hallucinations are? Like "A Beautiful Mind"

Doubtful. I have met some less-than-intelligent schizophrenics with incredibly detailed hallucinations.
