To all you successful applicants:

if anyone can advise me on who t get my 3rd letter of rec form I would greatly appreciate it.

So far I have asked....
1. pharmacist that I work for curnetly.
2. I have asked my Organic chemistry professor.

The last one is a tough one. My options are :

1. English prof who I had three classes with. Knows me well personally for three years. She's very interested in writing the letter.

2. A freshman bio prof I had two classes with. Known me two years. She is also my advisor. By the way is it okay to ask a science prof that is also your advisor for the cali schools (USC, West, UOP, and UC's) ?

3. A second pharmacist that I started a new clerkship with. I've worked with him for a few ours once a week for two months. But he's a USC alumni and conducts interviews sometimes. For sure i'm gona have him send a leter directly to USC, but should he be my third sent to all schools?

any suggestions / comments are greatly appreciated!

By the way, should the circumstances surrounding two quarters of not so hot grades be discussed in the personal statement or in the supplemental application question about special circumstances that have impacted your grades?

Thanks

I would get the bio teacher. They know you on a more personal level of hard work and dedication. I'm sure your pharmacist does also, but that is ranging on your work ethic in the pharmacy. Rather then how hard you're willing to work for a grade, or how you mingle with other students around you. I personally got my pharmacist, chem teacher, and microbiology teacher. One thing i did before they wrote the letter, was i met with them all personally and talked with them about my passion for the profession and why i wanted to be a pharmacist. My chem teacher i had her for 4 classes and she knew that i worked great in groups and was always willing to help others. But she didnt know my background of pharmacy. She was very impressed, even though i had A's in all her classes it gave her a better insight of who i was.

Good luck to you!

Thanks
Get the bio teacher for sure

Thanks for the help guys...i really apreacite it!!

i just have one last question. Just playing devlis advocate here....

I thought that the english prof as the third would be a great one to make me stand out from the rest of my competition. she could talk about written and oral communcation skills.....and she knows me very well. she would be in addition to an o-chem and pharmacist of course.

do you guys think a two science professors are best regardless??

I don't think it matters very much which one you choose. It should be the professor who can best speak to your abilities to complete a professional doctorate. The bio professor can speak to your proficiency in science (and is your advisor) and the english professor can speak to your communication abilities. It looks like a toss up to me. Choose the one who knows you best and who will write you the best recommendation.

Personally, I chose two chemistry professors for my academic LORs. I had the most long-standing relationship with them having spent hours in lectures, labs, office hours and just gabbing in the hall on a deserted-campus Friday.

Thanks for the advice!

I'll approach both and see who can best write the letter!

Thanks agian, I really appreciate it

I would get the English teacher to write it. You say that she has known you for a long time, so she can address your growth and ambition over the years. She is enthusiastic to help you, and you know she will write a nice sounding letter too.

I had the director of my grad program, an organic professor, and an old employeer write mine. So they dont all need to be (and probably shouldnt be) science related.

Hmmm...I think that I'd go with the English teacher because:

1. It seems like you've known her the longest and she'd have a pretty good grasp of who you are as a person.
2. Obviously, you have solid grounding in the sciences; you don't necessarily need science teachers to back that up. Having a teacher from a completely different area will make highlight the fact that you're a well-rounded person, which I think that most schools would appreciate.

And oh yeah, you did mention that she'd jump at the chance to make your letter. Any enthusiasm goes a long way, after all. ;D

Hope this helps! Good luck!

if you do go with the english teacher, you could give her a resume of all the things you have accomplished, including all the volunteer/pharmacy work you have done, and talk with them about the field and what you want to do, and let them know what the adcoms are looking at for in the prospective applicants. this could help the prof to write a thorough recommendation that would touch on all the areas you would need.

personally i think it doesn't matter for your case if you ask the bio or english teacher, since you already have a science rec, but i'd go with the person who knows you longer or who you have a closer relationship with-- go with who you like more.
