I am not even in dental school yet, but I am on my second round of applying...i'll be there someday. My uncle is a dentist, my dad a dental lab tech, so when I am out I plan on working for my uncle. Him and I haven't really gotten to the specifics yet, but he does plan to work a lot less once i am out and established. How does this generally work in dentistry? What cut will he take out of my pay when I'm out? How do I get paid exactly? He will probably just do whatever the norm is, even though we're family, I know I won't be spoiled. He will eventually sell me his practice when he feels i am capable to handle it on my own. Can anyone give me any input as to how a new dentist starts into an already established practice?

The answer to your question:

Copy and paste your post to your uncle. There is absolutely no way for anyone here to answer your question accurately. Plus you're a min. of 5 years away from being dentist----lots can change. Good luck.

he won't tell me actually...he's most likely planning slave labor...but really, he won't discuss it yet. so who knows what will happen.

Well, I can partly understand his rationale. He probably is waiting for you to at least learn something about dentistry first. I wouldn't worry about it until you are D3 or D4. Who knows, you may find a much better deal as your education progresses.

No need to ask these questions for at least 4 years. And even if you go into business with your dad, I would still have someone help with the transition. If you don't have things written down, he may keep saying ... just a little longer until your ready. But don't worry about that now. Worry about your application. Most D4s don't even have things figured out.
