A quick question for students.

Are there a lot of older students in your program? I did the army thing out of high school and I'm 29 just getting ready to apply to schools for podiatry. I was discharged from the US Army with an ankle injury and that's what started my interest in the field. My treating podiatrist was completely dedicated to his field and didn't give me that "treat and street" attitude you sometimes get from other health care professionals. I hope to earn my D.P.M. and work in a hospital setting one day or maybe even get back into the military.

I guess I'm just a little worried that those reviewing me for admission will see my age and wonder if I'm not dedicated having not gone to college right off the bat. Hopefully my fears are unwarranted.

There are several older students at AZPod. I can think of at least four in the past few years that have been 35+ and several others in my class around the 30 yr old mark. It might depend on the school, but from my experience that shouldn't be an issue. Life experience can work in your favor.

Currently, i'm in my second year and i turned 29 over the summer. also, i'm not the oldest either. don't ever let anything, especially your age, deter you from reaching your goals. we all take different paths in life.

29 is not old my friend. I know it seems to be when you have all these 22 year olds starting med school, but age doesnt matter. I have 6 people in my class over 30, and most are 26-30.

If your app is good, you will be fine.

The average age in the entire WesternU school is 29.

In our pod class we have 2 30+, and many that are in their late 20s.

Age is not a limiting factor. I think it actually helps an application -maturity and life experience can be a huge asset.

i am 29. i would guess half of my class at dmu is 25. also, most of the students who are doing well are the older ones. perspective and maturity is viewed as a positive by admissions, and it makes school much much easier.

You are 29? Wow. There is good range of students at NYCPM, some over 30, some 21, most in the middle.

Somehow, in my clinic group alone, we have a 30yo, a 37yo, and 2 39 yo's (Birds of feather?) I think patients trust us more. Maybe it's the gray hair, or maybe they think we're the attendings?

Where I did my undergrad work I got plenty of weird looks from the teens when they saw my wedding ring followed by "Dude, how old are you?"

Thanks for the input. Although I've not decided 100 percent between DPM or MD\DO it's good to know that there will be other "old" guys around, heh. I know I really want to work with the foot area because(and this is just purely my opinion so no offense to anyone) beyond the eyes you would be hard pressed to find an area of the body that so directly affects someones ability to enjoy life. I like the fact that Podiatry students get to start their training in their perferred area so much sooner. When I do something I want it to be the best work I can do.

Im 37 years old and a 2nd year podiatry student...and im not the oldest in my class!!! Like stated before, we all take different paths in life, so follow your dream 👍 The time will fly by and you'll be done before you know it 🙂
