This is the time of the student recruitment cycle that starts to generate all sorts of elation, tension, and deflation, as the letters from schools start to show up in mailboxes.

Here a few truths about that dreaded creature: the Rejection :meanie: Letter:

A rejection letter is not
  • a rejection of YOU!
  • a rejection of YOUR DREAMS!
  • the opinion of ALL schools of pharmacy
A rejection letter is
  • a managerial reality
  • a necessary evil in the land of high demand and fierce competition
  • one school's response...only 1
This means that there are over 100 other schools that you should explore. If you are serious about pursuing pharmacy education, there is a school out there for you...one that is LOOKING FOR YOU.

Go back and find the schools with later application deadlines. Some, like my school (Belmont University) keep their application process open until late March. Others use rolling admissions processes that quickly dip into wait listed applications by late January. Other schools stagger their interview processes over several months, and issue new invitations to interview each time.

Final Rule: DON'T GIVE UP!

You're right just because one school rejects you doesn't mean others will also, and if it doesn't work out this year, improving your application for next year will help a lot particularly if you gain some experience

This is a little (ok, completely) off topic but I was curious to know about Belmont University. I understand that it is a private school and in Nashville. I was surprised when I learned that there wasn't a 'large' pharmacy school in Nashville given the size of the city and the huge amount of research being done at Vanderbilt.

So tell us a little about your school. I actually plan to live nearby this summer for an internship.

Y.O.U. can prevent forest fires...Yep

Anyone want to be a Neuro Surgeon? They can make $500,000 per year...

Jesus christ, this post is precisely the reason:meanie::meanie::meanie: why I want to shoot the majority of pre-meds. Enough with the neuro-surgeon stuff already, stop watching grey's anatomy and dreaming, some of us are not as money hungry and are looking for a little more something in life than just pockets full of cash.

Also how in the world is your post related to this thread ? Is there like an invasion of pre-meds within the last few days that post neuro-surgeon stuff everywhere ?

No kidding! It scares me to think that all these pre-med students are interested in is money... You should be a doctor because you like the work and want to help people (and can handle blood and other body fluids *shudder) not because it makes a lot of money. I mean, you could make even more money by being a mobster or drug dealer, but that doesn't mean you should make that your dream, right?

Acetyl:

You aren't the only person to be surprised that there's not been a SOP in a city of 1.7 million, with a huge medical infrastructure. We were too! That's a key reason that we've committed to building a school of pharmacy here.

Belmont U is a long-standing school in Nashville...3 blocks east of Vanderbilt U Medical Center. Our SOP starts its first class on Aug 25, 2008 with a class size of 75. Our curriculum is a traditional 4-year PharmD program that requires 64 semester hours of prerequisite courses prior to admission.

We have established a strong relationship with Vanderbilt Med and other major Nashville-based health care entitities: we will share some key faculty and access to learning sites, among a range of collaborative research activities.

This is going to be a strong program, one that will be nationally competitive. Pluse, it's located in a great city.

Learn more about this program by doing any of the following:
  1. check out the school's website
  2. contact the school's staff directly (615.460.6748)
  3. come by and visit
Thanks for the opportunity to share a bit about this new pharmacy program.

what is the status of accreditation? spring is kinda late, possible but

The accrediting body for pharmacy education, The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, uses a multi-step five-year accrediatation process for new programs. Belmont USOP has complete all steps to date without any negative findings. Our next two stages occur within the next 6 months, and we expect to continue to receive only positive reviews. Final, full accreditation is only provided after the graduation of a first class (for us that will be 2012).

Graduates from school working under "candidate" status (the status between enrolling and graduating the first class) are eligible to sit for national and state exams.

I'll gladly provide any interested parties more information off-line. Use my belmont university email address (here's how I'll get around the rules on posting links😀): The first part is -- hobsone@ The second part is --mail.belmont.edu
