A thank you to the doctor who let you shadow them?!

So for those of you who have shadowed a doctor.....what is something you can get them as a thank you for letting you shadow?

Just write them a thank you note... NO GIFTS. Write something along the lines of this:

Thank you for providing me the opportunity to shadow you... blah blah blah, I learned a lot blah blah blah, it strengthened my interest in medicine.... etc

Nice card is usually good enough. I shadowed a family friend and I bought him a a starbuck's card.

This is very true. Even more so in this day and age. People are so disconnected because of electronic communication that a card has more meaning than it ever did. When I sort through the mail, I always get excited when I have a card-sized envelope because I know it's not some funky solicitation. My mother got involved with Send Out Cards a while back. It's a company that allows you to log in online and send cards to people quick. They even allowed you to submit your own handwriting so they could create a custom font for your so the printed text looked hand-written. The thing was a multi-level marketing type of thing but we just used it to send cards. They made a big impression and people would call and say thanks and stuff. A nice card can really make someone's day.

On my last day of shadowing I like to bring in homemade baklava or sweets or something to thank not only the doctor but the staff. Probably overkill, but it's nice to thank everyone in the workplace.

I shadowed at a large pediatric practice over the past winter and I gave all of the doctors thank you cards and a large box of chocolates for the office. It may have been overkill, but I was there for awhile and they seemed to like the chocolates and cards 🙂

Pick something out that you think means a lot to them, that they talked about. Think about what means the most to that person in terms of medicine, and compliment them for it.

Honestly, if you pick the right thing, the compliment will stick with them for years. They'll forget about the chocolates soon after they eat them.

Wow, I feel like a terrible human being. I just told them: thank you for this oppurtunity, and I was on my way. Seriously, I never even considered buying them a card or a gift basket..🙁

As said before, its always good to bring something for the physician AND STAFF! The doc lets you shadow, but the staff has to put up with you being there. Also, if you shadow a second time, the staff may not remember you, but could remember your coffee/doughnuts/muffins/etc and may be a little more willing to help second time around!

I went with the gift card approach as well, you can never go wrong with Starbucks or bringing in some cookies for the staff.

Swing by Target and find a nice thank you card, a little goes a long way 😉
