During the essay reviews, every applicant begins to blur into a blob of sameness. Every now and then, something catches your eye and makes you think, "I want to meet this person." A similar thing happens during the interviews. By the second month of interviewing, you?re beginning to ask for someone, anyone, with an interesting story to spice up the interview process. For those of you with an engineering background or just a passion for mechanical tinkering, here?s an idea.
The 2005 ASSET Challenge www.assetchallenge.com is design competition to develop and build monoskis for disabled alpine skiers. The on-slope competition is held in March 2005 at the National Sports Center for the Disabled in Winter Park, Colorado. As further incentive, registered team members get a free day of skiing at Winter Park/Mary Jane Resort on the last day of the event. Trust me, if you compete in the ASSET Challenge, you?ll have something more to talk about at your interview than volunteering as an EMT, working in a nursing home, tutoring children, working as a bench scientist, premed society blood donation drives, etc. This is something nearly every interviewer will find unique and interesting. Regardless of whether you compete in the challenge, good luck with your exams, applications and interviews.
