ok well here goes my story. My dad has NA ancestry from both of his grandparents, and they lived in oklahoma on a reservation and everything - but for some reason, they are not on any rolls that we have come acrossed, and so I cannot as of yet prove NA ancestry. This definitely affected me last year when i applied for undergrad @ UC's, Stanford, USC, ......etc Well, come february of that year, i received a letter from stanford with a form to fill out - it asked for percentage of NA blood, CDIB #(something i dont have still), etc. I wrote on there that i was searching - as fake as that sounds. So march comes around, the time to get decisions - One by one each of the colleges that i had applied to came in with acceptances - all of them - UC Berk, UCLA, UCSD, UCI, UCSB, ....USC.....and then, after going 10/10 acceptances, i got a letter from stanford stating my rejection. I was devastated - my stats were really good for a URM(though i couldnt prove that status) - 1420 SAT, 750 Sat2 writing, 710 math 2c, 700 Ah, 4.4, good EC'S .........basically - i felt and still do feel that if i could have proven NA ancestry on that form then i def. would have got in. My stats were high for a URM period. I was and still am pissed about this - this does apply to this board btw, - med school admissions -do they look at ethnicity. Are public med schools like the Uc's allowed to send a stanford prove your an indian form. If in interview, i am not brown, will my ancestry be disregarded - even if i can prove it - which is unlikely. And yes i am only about 1/6 NA, but its realy racist for people to discount it cuz some people of that percentage black look it , and get all the AA benefits. Sorry this is long 😉

you know you got into UCLA and UC Berkeley...that in by itself is a very great achievement.....forget about the ancestry part, a lot of schools have a random way of picking students even if you are the cream of the crop....so I don't think it is solely because you couldn't prove your ancestry...granted you had great scores and activities but who is there to say that there wasn't someone with your ancestry with EVEN HIGHER GRADES, you know what I mean? they have to pick a little of everybody, u know? 😉

You should learn to be thankful for what you have. Stanford is a good school, but in my opinion UC Berkelely and UCLA are just as good (and much cheaper).

Another thing, "My stats are really good for a URM"...that's a really controversial statement that will just piss people off. In the future it would be wiser to say "my stats are really good"..people know that American Indians are URMs no reason to piss people off.

FYI..I have a friend who is AA but is not on any of the federal roles. He is also caucasian. He DOES appear on HIS tribal role, and if you grew up on a reservation you should too. If you don't, then there's a problem with your story. Don't tell me that the tribe that you grew up with won't claim you because that's total bs.

My friend appears white, and no it didn't hurt him on his interviews. Alot of people asked him about what it was like to grow up on a reservation etc.
