So I'm interested in Addiction psych, and I joined AAAP. But I know ASAM is also quite large.

Just wondering which association is more beneficial for a resident to take part in, with regards to conferences, being a member, making connections for fellowships, etc.

Thanks,

If you're a psychiatrist and thinking at all about an addiction fellowship, it's AAAP*. Smallish meeting, mental health orientation, lots of emphasis on mentorship and attracting trainees.

If you're in another field and have a burning interest in addiction medicine, check out ASAM--but it is larger and I think less "trainee-friendly."

*(If you're going to the meeting this December in Huntington Beach, PM me--I'll buy you a beer.
Unless you're in recovery, of course... Then we'll have coffee.)
