Does the method explained always work? I basically realized that 2 of the alleles were going to match 100% of the time (B and E) so I made a punnet square with the other 3 (A, C, D) and came out with only 2 matching the offspring. So 2/64=1/32.. obviously not right.

I thought about doing it the way they describe in the answer explanation, but I figured that was the trap they were setting and not actually how to get the right answer.

So, does this method always work?

Yeah, this is the easiest way to do these problems. Just get the probability fraction for each gene and then multiply them all together for your answer. Making punnett squares for more than one or two traits is a nightmare and, in the context of the MCAT, a huge time sink.
