The answer explanation seems to make an association with elastic oscillations and choice B) the earth's crust was subjected to reinforcing resonant effects that cumulatively built up local stresses.

I'm having a hard time understanding what answer choice B is saying. I understand why the right answer , A , is the right answer, but I was wondering if someone could help explain answer choice B means.

resonant effects refer to a system that is oscillating near its natural frequency. it's like the example with the soldiers all marching in unison on a bridge, which causes the bridge to undergo significant oscillation and potentially collapse
 
Follow-up: why is C wrong? As in, both Kaplan and the AAMC explanations say it was contradicted by paragraph 3 but I don't see how...?
