Sorry, I'm not sure where to post this...

I'm working on filling out my AAMC application to register for the MCAT..

Should I check yes or no on this question- I'm not sure...

The Medical Minority Applicant Registry

I'm a 30 year old, white female, living in rural Northern Michigan...

Thank you so much!

They don't consider females to be an underrepresented minority.

You are eligible for Med-MAR if you meet the following criteria:

You are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident visa holder, and;
you self-identify as a member of a racial or ethnic group historically underrepresented in medicine—African-American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian/Alaska Native or Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, and/or are economically disadvantaged.

If you check yes, then you'll get a bunch of unnecessary spam in your email inbox from med schools in the hope of recruiting a minority to their school (which you're not)

Now, do you have to be 100% minority to check the box? If someone is say half filipino and hispanic, could he/she honestly check that box?

It's an integrity thing. Does the person self identify at that race?

Do you consider yourself a minority? In medicine, you probably aren't considered one.

Thanks for the responses. I agree, I checked no...

I'm going to pose a question since the thread is already here.

I'm a third cherokee, but have no proof because my father is gone. Should I just forget about using it?

1/3? I don't think genetics works like that...

A third? How does that work?

And do you classify and look Native American? If not, I wouldn't mark it.

Sent from my iPod using SDN Mobile app. Please excuse the typos.

1/3? Check your math, Fauxahontas.

My finger missed the four. I'm 1/4. Sorry, it happens. And no, it's not readily noticeable. My swedish/french is very dominant in me.

You are what you are, don't deny the cherokee in you. Remember in the new Star Trek movie, Spock had some trouble identifying if he was vulcan or human. Eventually he embraced both.

Yeah. It's just I'm very white, and I don't want to try for something and look like I'm lying about it to get special treatment, because no one can tell. I was just curious. I'm 99% sure that I'll write 'white,' unless somehow I got documentation.
