AAMC Verbal Curves = SMALL MARGIN?

I recently took 2 AAMC tests and I got ROCKED by the verbal sections. Is it me, or do those curves seem a little too stingy?

It really hard to gauge what the AAMC curve is predicting since you are scaled on eight passages during the real MCAT (dont forget the test passage). Also, everyform would have been different and the people taking it is always different.

I have tried to stay positive thinking if I get anywhere from 40-50 right i should be in decent shape, i know I wont get above a ten lol, I just want an 8-10 to stay afloat🙂

What do you mean that one of the nine passages is a "test passage"? I've never heard that before...

A large pool of content experts writes the items. New items are included in each administration of the MCAT as "field test" questions. Field test questions are not scored, but they are assessed for their performance and, if they are approved, are used on a future MCAT.

From past discussions there is a lot of speculation that one of the 10 question passages is the test passage. But thats all heresay who knows what the beast will hold 🙂

I've heard a general rule of thumb is that 75% will put you around the 10 range. Again, rule of THUMB.

I would love to be consistenly getting 45ish right, but right now im low 40s, so I would be very happy with an 8, estatic with a 9, and cry if I got a ten 😀

it seems to me from looking at the scales that 40-42 range is usually a 9. I'm stuck in the upper 30's and don't know how to improve. any suggestions?

I was stuck in a similar situation and my raw score has finally cleared the 40 mark consistently. I know this sounds way to general, but keep the main idea in your head for every question. Im sure the super genious 12+ ppl have some better suggestions though hehe🙂

I have problems keeping what is and what is NOT in the passage in mind when I answer questions. I keep wanting to pull in outside information (prob because I was a lib arts major)

I used to have the same problem, I pretty much fixed it by using the EK method...while reading the passage formulate the main idea, then after completing the passage, take about 10 or 20 seconds to understand the main idea and integrating the authors attitude. Thus far this has worked really well, the only questions I am missing are the detail (according to the passage) questions, mainly because I am trying not waste time going back and forth.

Only three weeks to go, but vast improvements can still be made
