Does anyone know what happened to the bill (ab 539) which would allow 3rd and 4th year dental students to obtain a California Dental Hygienist license? This is supposed to help dental students pay off their student loans until they get their dentist licenses. It MIGHT also be available to us foreign dentists as a fallback in case the RT never gets extended. Got any news?

Hi Ivorinedust,

I reviewed the legislative record on this bill and while it may be reintroduced in the next legislative session, I doubt that it will be expanded to include foreign trained dentists. There are a lot of dental hygiene educational programs in California and there is not as much of a perceived shortage of hygienists as there is of dentists. We might try to convince a legislator to introduce such a bill but I can just imagine the howls from all the hygienists in training. 98% of all dental hygienists in America are women and you know what they say about their scorn.

Years ago I met two(male...uhurm...) old time foreign dentists who are licensed hygienists in California. One of them told me that back in the '70s, one need only to pass the NDBE to obtain a hygienist license.

A friend who claims to be "in the know" says if ever the RT closes, the hygienist opportunity re-opens for foreign dentists. I can't verify this though.

There is also talk among dental techs that they are pushing for the regulation of the denturist profession in California. This is another alternative, but I think it is a long shot.

Thanks, Scott for your insight.

Is denturist a dental technician? If it is, just remember that most of us, dentists, know very little about dental lab procedures and thereof a dental tech job won't be as easy to perform as hygienist and assistant.

Hi Meggs:

Of course a denturist's job would be more difficult than a hygienist's or assistant's. But it is still a very good alternative to being a licensed dentist in terms of carreer fullfilment and monetary compensation.

A friend of mine from dental school is a denturist in Washington state. He employs a couple of dentists in his office. If you can keep two dentists in your payroll, you should be doing good, eh🙂

I am not too sure about the difference between a denturist and a dental tech, but I assume that the denturist can do a little bit of the clinical stuff like taking impressions and fitting of the dentures. Dental techs just work in the lab.

My dental school also emphasizes the laboratory part of dentistry along with the clinicals. We used to wax, invest, cast and finish our inlays. Our prosthodontic requirements would not be credited to us if we did not process them by ourselves in the school lab--which is supervised by the instructor on duty. And so on...Life was hard in my foreign dental school, but was worth it.

As Scott pointed out re the hygienists, we should hear a louder howl if the denturist profession is ever allowed in California. This time from the more influencial CDA and dental students, I suppose.

Brotherly,

Ok, I'm lost here. What exactly is a denturist?

Btw, where did you go to school ivorinedust?
I did wax my prostho, but only for experience purposes, the lab will do everything. On total dentures will do a lot of lab things, but I don't know the english names of it.. 🙁 I sure remember I hated it. 😀

Hi Meggs:

I earned my DMD from the Philippines. It was tough. We had to look for our own patients for our clinicals. The school did not provide them. We had to do 3 rootcanals (1 anterior, 2 posterior) 3 RPDs, 4 sets of complete dentures, an odontectomy plus a special surgical procedure(apicoectomy with retrograde Amalgam filling recommended) 50 adult and 10 pedodontic tooth extractions, plus a myriad of other clinical requirments. And even if we finished the cases, they won't be credited until we recall the patients. Many patients vanish once they get their dentures, so we hold on to the dentures and give it to them a week later, during the "recall". Haha! Then most of the lab work we do ourselves, except firing the porcelains and casting the frameworks for RPD. It was fun though. Burned some eyelashes on the Hanau torch🙂 I had some experience investing and casting a Cl IV inlay too.

If you do a Google search on "denturism" you'd find out what it is. Basically it is denture laboratory technology but with a twist--you can do impressions, fittings and stuff. This will rob the dentists of their bread and butter(which is prostho), so I am doubtful if it will ever prosper in California.

Not true, Meggs😛 Canada has legalized denturism and the profession, although in its infancy, is booming...A few states have allowed denturists, but like hygienists, they have to be supervised by licensed dentist. Among them are Maine, Washington state, Montana, Oregon, Idaho and Arizona.

But then again...what if I become a licensed dentist? I don't want anybody taking away my job!!!😡

To Jennylyn:

Nagtapos ako sa escuelahan sa Gastambide, Sampaloc, Manila. Dati nasa Sta. Mesa. Alam mo na kung ano yun. Ikaw, saan?

Sorry guys...should I have said that p.m.'ly?🙂

Hi Ivorinedust,

Even little snippets of knowledge of foreign languages seems like much more useful information for everyday life than the Krebs Cycle. Don't you think?
