Hi everyone!

I have been accepted to a program and will be starting this summer. I'm still in school now but I have a potential job opportunity which would involve obtaining the Registered Behavior Technician certification (RBT). For people who have the certification or know about ABA- would it be beneficial as an OT? I'm hoping to work in pediatrics in the future!

I did ABA during my gap year before entering OT school, and the company I worked for paid for me to take the RBT. I would say that if your potential employer offers this, go for it! Many therapeutic day schools and pediatric clinics have BCBAs/RBTs and OTs, so it wouldn't hurt to bring some knowledge about another discipline. In any case, it's a certification that is good for life, so you'll always be able to have it on your resume.

I’m a new grad OT working at a clinic for kiddos with autism. Majority of staff are BCBAs and RBTs. I worked as an ABA therapist prior to grad school. It was advantageous for me for fieldwork placements, as well as my work setting! Feel free to send any questions my way.

I am currently doing ABA and I think that it is great work to do especially if you are interested in pediatrics. One thing that the job has taught me is that while I love working with kids, working with the same child for 4 to 6 hours everyday is exhausting and it has made me really glad that I am pursuing a degree in OT where my responsibilities will go beyond just administering treatment but also creating treatment goals, conducting testing and writing reports. Don't get me wrong but having only two kids on a caseload can just be overwhelming and I like the idea of having more kiddos!

Hi, I'm planning to apply to OT school and looking for a job before I get in. I should be starting next year (2019), what kind of jobs can I apply to while I'm free? If it helps I also have a bachelors degree in Psychology.

Certainly ABA is an option, if offered in your community. Rehab tech/aide jobs are also a good option, but they can be hard to come by. Otherwise, I think it is really dependent on your interests and the jobs that are available in your area. I went straight through from undergrad to grad, but some classmates were nannies, too.
