I'm a bit surprised no one already mentioned this show, but I heard it being discussed on NPR's Fresh Air this afternoon. In particular, I'm curious as to whether anyone on these forums participated or was around Hopkins when the filming took place. I'm not a big fan of Grey's Anatomy (well...not anymore), and I guess ABC is trying to market "Hopkins" as real-life Grey's. However, I do plan to check out the show because I found out that along with residents and attendings, the show also includes medical students. As a rising M1, I think it will be interesting to see a documentary of their 3rd and 4th year lives during medical school. Anybody else have any opinions on the show?

I didn't realize there was a forum for just TV shows. Oops. Maybe a moderator will eventually move this thread there or just delete it. Thanks for letting me know!

I don't foresee anything new. It looks like it's going to be another "reality-TV" type show which I'm sure will take into consideration the American public's threshold for stomaching gritty imagery.

"Trauma: Life in the ER" has been doing this for a while, albeit the target audience appears to be more for the health-care professional and/or individuals specifically interested in healthcare (especially evident by the advertisements in between the program, and by the program's airing on the Discovery Health network). Some notable moments I remember were an emergency thoracotomy being performed on a patient (who unfortunately died shortly thereafter), deaths due to various causes, and the reporting of these deaths to patient family members (which I'm sure these members consented to being filmed as part of a documentary)-which was not pretty at all. There are also the success stories, too.

All the other dramatized shows like Grays Anatomy, House, etc., which feature physicians are disgraceful.

A show like this is a perfect opportunity to give the general public a look into the REAL life of residents and physicians. Unfortunately, it looks like they will go the easy route and focus on the drama, the 'gossip', and such instead of the real life.

I've been at the JHU med campus for the last 4 years as a grad student, so I was around when ABC news was here. Didn't really see them around much, but I was annoyed that they forced the student health clinic out of their space in the hospital so ABC could set up offices on site. The clinic moved to about a 25 min. walk away, which was not a fun walk when I came down with food poisoning 😱.

I find the show boring. I don't care to watch patient interviews after doing them all day myself. The overdramatization of these patients' medical care is disgusting and it really seems to be a narcissistic role that JHU has in the show, and honestly Hopkins is no Mayo in terms of providing the best patient care hands down. They didn't have to name the show "Hopkins" but they did, and it really makes the program lose legitimacy in my mind since it really is just a huge advertisement for that institution. Sadly, we have come to a day when academic medical institutions are essentially corporate beasts.

Oh bull****. I've worked at both Mayo and Hopkins and there is nothing magical at Mayo that makes it better than JHMI. Both are at the top of their game.
