Hey everyone,

I got pimped today on the grading for abdominal abscesses and was told the grades were "Hinches" system or something along those lines. However, I haven't found anything on the grading of abdominal abscesses- I know it goes from I-IV...can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks!!

The Hinchey classification - proposed by Hinchey et al. in 1978[1] classifies a colonic perforation due to diverticular disease. The classification is I-IV:

Hinchey I - localised abscess (para-colonic)
Hinchey II - pelvic abscess
Hinchey III - purulent peritonitis (the presence of pus in the abdominal cavity)
Hinchey IV - faeculent peritonitis.
