Program-Specific Info / Q's Abilene Christian University New MOT program

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Also rejected. May have something to do with running late on turning everything in.

MakingMoves, just work on strengthening your application in different areas. More observation hours, retake classes, take more advanced classes that just a few schools require but that look good to the schools who would have you take those classes in your first year of school (neuroscience, advanced anatomy/cadaver, biomechanics, medical ethics?)

And take time to think hard about what is your burning passion for OT ? Not just thinking its a high paying, growth career with high job satisfaction that sounds like its better than the alternatives. In my case, it is that I like working hands on helping people face to face, one on one. I also believe that physical rehabilitation that allows people to stay active throughout the latter part of life is key to preventing many obesity/inactivity related illnesses - the ones that are causing skyrocketing healthcare costs. Also, my somewhat unsatisfactory experiences with being a Physical therapy patient make me want to approach things differently and try ways of tracking/improving long term outcomes.

Please nobody plagiarize what I just said, just think about what speaks to you in OT and how you would express it in an interview that would make your passion show through. In my case, if I won the lottery I would probably still go and do some form of formal rehab science degree, then self-fund health promotion and research.
Ok thanks..it's like a punch in the stomach... I had a feeling because my gpa is like a 2.89 however I'm taking whole bunch of classes...I don't know if they will overlook my gpa by this summer it should be a 3.0

I also got accepted and I'm so torn between ACU and UTMB! One of my big things is the $30,000 price difference. Anyone else deciding between these two?

Different schools look at GPA different ways, and most have some kind of complicated ranking system for applicants. Some of those schools will always take undergraduate GPA and use it as the one they look at when doing rankings, no matter how many classes you took after graduation, or how long it has been since graduation. Some schools will see me as a 3.8 GPA student, some will see me as a 2.3 GPA student, depending which semesters they look at and emphasize.

That's why I think that people who don't fit a "normal" profile (consistent good student throughout undergrad, not too many years out of undergrad) may need to apply to more schools. And/or have a knockout essay with a strong sense of why they want to be an OT. I'm kicking myself for not changing careers earlier in life. Getting into OT school would have been much easier then.

If you feel you would be overloading yourself to take say three classes and make a B+ average in those, maybe try for two classes and make A's in them. Recent history counts more than past history.

You have a 3.7 there is no way they will reject you. Your GPA says it all. :highfive: Congrats!!!!!!!

You have a 3.8 GPA and they rejected you……Well I'm going to get a second bachelors in Exercise Science. I also just received my CNA license so I get to work with patients. I have 63 hours of observation hours. I'm going to get extra 40 hours that should help. I've worked with a child who have special needs. I also have A's in Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2. I'm going to take the GRE and MAT test this summer. Thanks for talking with me. It just hurts to know you want something so bad but you have road blocks in the way

No one has mentioned being wait listed at ACU. Does anyone know if they even have a wait list?

I have a 3.8 in everything *after* my initial bachelors degree. And since ACU is in Texas, they should know that the school I got my bachelor's at is very hard to get into and doesn't water down the curriculum. I don't know if they know that 1/3 of the students that enter as science/engineering majors can't handle it and switch to humanities/social sciences. I stuck it out and got a 2.67.

My guess is that ACU is looking for students that are strongly Christian and compatible with their denomination. Read more about their campus and history. They banned dancing on campus at one point in the last 5 years. In my essay I said that I come from a more liberal Christian denomination, and that my experience is that people with a conservative religious bent who try to evangelize me actually push me further away from their version of Christianity.

Hey Guys a little late but I got accepted into ACU, any one on here going to attend?

Yeah, i will be attending. But still holding out hope on the schools i got wait listed at.

Oh awesome! Yeah I am currently on other schools waitlists as well but it is nice to know that we have been accepted into a program! ACU is a fantastic school! main reason holding out for wait listed schools is the cost.. Many of the other programs are starting this upcoming month in Texas at least not sure when in the Month though.. do you happen to know?

uthscsa- starts may 21st, texas tech - not sure when in may

Oh yeah, paid a couple days ago. Hope we qualify for scholarships, cos tuition is expensive. I'm waitlisted at UTMB and Uthscsa.

Agreed! I hope so too! its very expensive been looking into apartments near the school and they aren't badly priced so thats good. I'm wait listed at Tech and UTHSCSA.

Hello!
I recently applied to ACU and I'm anxiously waiting to hear back, but it won't be for about another 3 weeks or so. I've applied to other Texas schools but was denied unfortunately so ACU is my last hope. For those of you all who were accepted can you please post your stats and how you are liking the program so far? It would really help me out!
