I got an interview at Abington Memorial Hospital. They only gave me four days to choose from! Can anyone give me information about the program before I go for the interview? I understand it is a community based hospital. What are my chances for fellowship later on? How are the teaching facilities? I also have an interview at Seton Hall Trinitas Hospital? Please give me information on both programs.

I don't know all the specifics but I rotated at Abington as a third year medical student and interviewed there for a prelim position and thought it was a nice place. It is a community program but the hospital itself is quite large and from what I remember they pretty much do everything except transplants (I could be wrong). The hospital itself is very nice and it is located in a fairly affluent suburb of Philadelphia. The categorical residents are a mix of FMGs, DOs, US MDs and the majority of prelims are US MDs. Overally I think it is an ok place if that is what you are looking for. From what I saw, which was a few years ago so I may be way off, you don't have all of the independence that you might find at a large academic medical center but I do think you could learn medicine there. Residents seemed very happy, not malignant and all and one of the highest salaries for residents that I have come across.

It's an excellent place, I'm a PGY-3 here and I couldn't be happier.

Teaching on the floors can be hit or miss, but you have to know how to work the system and make an effort to get to know the attendings who are more than happy to teach if you show interest.

The units are excellent, a dedicated CCU and a medical ICU run by pulmonary/critical care service. Both gave great teaching and patient exposure.

This place is BUSY. It's a private hospital so service tends to be the bottom line, but boy do you learn efficiency if you want to be a hospitalist!

All in all, a great program, sorry I don't have time for more specifics but I am covering the MICU today for the intraining exam and I don't have a lot of time.

Thank you all for answering. I've been waiting for someone who's done residency at this hospital! I wanted to ask Vaderize a few more questions. How would you rate the teaching at the hospital, considering it is a private hospital? Is there a whole lot of resident autonomy? I appreciate Steric's reply and want to know your opinion on what was said:

Are there currently any medical students that rotate through the program? Are the interns/residents required to do any teaching? Do you know what percentage of residents go into fellowships? I am interested in pursuing a career in academic medicine after residency, and the only interviews I have received so far are community programs. So I want to dig a little deeper into the teaching aspect. ..

To answer your questions directly:

1) Yes, lots of medical students, and we are expected to teach them!
2) Around 50% go into fellowships, excellent and prestigious match rate. People here are well connected and will make an effort on your behalf.
3) TONS of opportunities for research, if you are so inclined.

More later, covering the unit AGAIN today (so I don't really know any of the patients:meanie:)
