Hello Everybody... I was wondering about DO's and residencies. I wanted to know if DO's can apply to any residencies or is osteopathy resistricted to only primary care.
Personally I was interested in ophthalmology.
Any inputs appreciated
Sctiblet🙄 🙄 🙄

yes. you can even take USMLE exam and use the score to apply to M.D. residencies. (for them to compare you to other MD graduates)

Technically, you dont have to take the USMLE to apply to MD residency programs. A D.O. student friend of mine has interviews at dartmouth, yale and some state md schools without ever having taken the usmle, just the comlex.

yah, but by taking USMLE, it just makes them easier to compare you with other people. Since COMPLEX and USMLE are similar, it wouldn't hurt to take both.

At VCOm you have to take both COMLEX and USML. So I guess you could apply for a DO or MD residency.

I was wondering is VCOM the only school that requires both boards as a requirment for graduation?

Ack, no. This is a misconception and the leading reason why only 75% of DOs taking the USMLE pass (a great number often quoted by premeds and other people when they bash us)

COMLEX I is more clinical based. USMLE I is more basic-science heavy. COMLEX I is a marathon, seeing how well you can handle two days of grueling testing conditions. USMLE is similar to MCATs as in you can take it, and get drunk that night.

Is one harder than the other? Nope. It really depends on the individual. Some will say the USMLE was harder, while other will say COMLEX was harder.

Also remember that an osteopathic medical education is geared towards passing the COMLEX, not USMLE (makes sense, no?).

In conclusion - don't just assume that if you studied for the COMLEX, you can just take the USMLE. Many people do, and hence the low 75% passing score. You have to study for both tests.

KCOM has a 97% pass rate for COMLEX I and 94% for USMLE I.

Yes.

And I have no idea why.

Maybe to test their curriculum somehow. Maybe because of university affiliation? Who knows.

Its either going to prove to be a really good thing or a really bad thing....we will find out in 2 years.
