Hi, I'm currently studying a pre-med Honours program at a good school in Canada. I did well in my first year, did poorly in years 2 and 3 and am now doing very well in my 4th and final year. I will graduate with a cumulative GPA of about 3.0.
Medicine was always my goal growing up but mid-way through school I really changed my mind about what I wanted to do. My grades suffered during those two years as I settled into the idea of being a carpenter after I graduated.

Several impactful life events later and I'm back on the medical school track. My grades are high again and I have re-taken and excelled in the two courses that I failed previously. However, that doesn't help to hide my pock-marked transcript.

I am not sure how to proceed. I am more than willing to do what it takes to be competitive for medical school admission, but I don't know what it is that I need to do. It appears to be quite the grey area for those taking a non-traditional route to medical school. Do I pursue a Master's degree? I have no interest in research... Do I pursue a different, less competitive professional degree (if they even exist) to show I am capable?

Please advise.

If you are interested in DO programs, retake some more undergrad classes in which you received C/D/F etc and then score 28+ on the MCAT and apply to DO schools in the summer of 2015/2016 that accept Canadian applicants, Michigan State is an example.

If you want to do MD, join a pre-medical post-bacc program in the states. After completing this program, apply for and join a special masters program at a Medical School (Rosalind Franklin, Drexel, GW etc). Then score 32+ on the MCAT and apply to all MD programs that accept Canadians.

Thanks for your answer! One question though: if I have completed all medical school pre-req courses, would I even be able to get into a decent post-bacc program? Would I be better off repeating the courses I did poorly in?
