Last year it was end of June.

Anyone have any idea when the ASTRO abstract notification is? I thought it was some time around now.

On the website, it said June 10th. But I haven't received anything yet. Last year, I didn't hear anything from them after the deadline and I had to email them and ask what the dilly-o was.

I saw on the website that they moved the date from the 10th to June 15th...hopefully only a few more days of wondering

That's interesting that the date was changed ... my co-resident called, and they said they'd let us know today.

Hmmm...let us know if you hear anything!

Got an oral presentation... You guys should look for me. I'll be the deer in the headlights...

In the oral presentation, how many people are generally in the audience? Does oral presentation generally refer to powerpoint? Do we need to send the powerpoint before hand to the tech guys who load it?

they vary in size from dozen to hundreds. dont be afraid. people aren't looking to skewer you. you'll be presented as a student/resident whatever and people will appreciate your efforts. and yes they are powerpoint. good luck.

oral (platform) presentation - 10 minute talk with powerpoint slides (10-20) in front of an audience followed by a 5 min q&a. has a moderator/discussant to lead the discussion.

poster presentation (oral) - usually 2-3 minutes with several powerpoint slides (2-4) along with a poster that is put up in a room with other oral posters, usually in the same site/topic. the moderator leads the discussion. not sure how long the q&a period is, but i think its about 5 min.

poster - put a poster together, and stand by it for usually a 4 hour period of time. may (not) get questions asked by people walking / reading them.

yes, you submit your slides in advance of your presentation. if you make last minute edits, you can re-submit (upload actually the day of your talk.

I don't know. Kian Ang hammered me with some critical questions last year. I thought I answered them pretty well, but I now have a good personal reference point for grade 3 xerostomia 🙂!!

ah well there is always someone. if that happens the trick is to just say "i dont know" when you dont know. Not apolgically, not defiantly. Matter of fact. Most of the time people will be appreciative of your work. And if you get pimped, they'll also feel for you.

and no need to start off and identify yourself as a medstudent...this method of self deprecation is lame...

Does anyone know of any travel awards or anything that med students are eligible for? All the rad onc ones I've seen are for residents only.

i dont know of any radonc societies that offer medstudents travel awards....

Some conferences that have offered travel grants to med students in the past:
-ASTRO Translational Meeeting
-ASCO GI/GU/Breast/H&N symposia
-Best of ASCO meetings
-AACR
-International Congress of Radiation Research
-American Brachytherapy Society

Hope this helps....

the astro/asco aacr grants are for med students submit abstracts (and probably get them accepted)...not just for med students who want to attend the meeting on 'free money'.

astro, however, does offer 'free travel money' to residents who submit an application and an essay on how they would benefit from the meeting to their smaller symposia (IGRT, QA, refresher course, etc)
