Ho do salaries and work hours in academic anesthesia (MD/DO) compare with private practice? Is a fellowship required to stay on an academic career?

Is there a way to be clinical/teaching faculty without having to pursue any research and still rise up the ranks?

What are some perks of academic practice (i.e. one attending at a private institution told me that he gets tuition reimbursed for his kids' college up to the cost of undergrad at that institution)?

The hours for academic anesthesia are much less but so is the pay. It's possible to work a 40 hour week in academics, but 60 is more of the norm in private practice. Academic salaries in the northeast are in the 200-300k range, where private practice salaries are closer to 300k and up. Keep in mind there is a lot of variability.

It's pretty hard to land an academic position without doing a fellowship and/or research. You definitely won't get promoted without it. You could go the non-tenure track route if you like teaching and want a lighter schedule, but your pay will be even less.... and there really aren't many opportunities for promotion, hence the name "non-tenure track."

I can't give any examples, but I have heard of some universities offering reduced or free tuition for children at that instituition.
