Hey guys
I am currently a freshman pursuing a dbl major in mathematics and biology, and in the long run want to go onto medical school. I was talking to my pre-med advisor today and he asked me if i wanted to be an Academic Associate at my local Hospital during the summer. He told me that these academic associates find patients for the doctors and then follow them around for some time....or along the lines of that (i didnt really undertand what he said...) So I just wanted to double check with you guys, if it's really worth my time. Should i just find a doctor who has a private office and volunteer with him/her? Or is there anything better for me to do in my first summer...? What do you guys think?

If you have that opportunity at hand might as well take it. I guess I would check how much time is spent 'finding patients' and how much actual time is spent with the doctor

Are you pre-med or pre-op?

Sounds like a pretty good opportunity to me. Might as well take it, and then add on shadowing experience throughout the rest of undergrad. 🙂

I've never heard of this exactly, but at worst, it's got to be better than shadowing (at least you're doing something). Give it a shot, if you hate it you can always quit and go find more traditional shadowing/volunteering opportunities.

If you have an academic associate program at your local hopsital by all means do it! I know of a handful of places that have it so it's not all that common. What school are you at? it may be one I went to or one i'll be a resident at next year.

Im going to brooklyn college. My advisor gave me the name of one of the guys that run the program at kings county hospital. He said that i have a spot for sure. Sounds like im gona give it a shot.
